Newton baseball picks up first win, downs visiting Marshalltown

Wermager homers in Cardinals’ non-conference victory

A patient night at the plate led to 12 runs for the Newton baseball team on Tuesday.

Derek Wermager belted his first career home run and the Cardinals piled up the runs early during a 12-5 non-conference home win against Marshalltown.

Newton scored one run in the first and fifth innings but put up crooked numbers in the second, third and fourth. All five Marshalltown runs came in the fourth.

It was Newton’s first win of the season and Marshalltown (3-1) lost for the first time.

The Cardinals (1-2) scored 12 runs on only five hits because they drew seven walks and were hit by four pitches.

Wermager’s first varsity homer was his only hit of the game, but he scored two runs and had four RBIs.

Cade Bauer walked twice, scored three runs, tallied two RBIs and stole one base, Skyler Milheiser was hit by four pitches, stole a career-high six bases and scored one run and Dakota Winkleman registered two hits, one double, two RBIs and one run.

Gabe Otto walked twice and scored one run, Rozendaal walked once, stole one base and scored two runs and Mason Mendez tallied one hit, one RBI and one steal.

Creighton Andrew chipped in one hit, one walk and one steal, Landry Rausch walked once and scored one run and Drew Bauer scored one run.

Otto earned the pitching win after tossing the first 3 1/3 innings. He allowed no runs on no hits with six strikeouts and one hit batter.

Rozendaal got the save after surrendering no earned runs on one hit, two walks and two hit batters. He fanned four in 3 2/3 innings.

Andrew gave up five earned runs on three hits, two walks and five hit batters and he fanned one in one inning of work.
