Cade Bauer had three hits, Skyler Milheiser collected two hits and drove in two runs and Dakota Winkleman made his first career pitching start and tossed five shutout innings, but the Newton baseball team lost a big lead late during an 8-7 non-conference home loss to Bondurant-Farrar on Friday.
The Cardinals led 7-0 after five innings, but the Bluejays rallied with seven in the sixth and one in the seventh to win on the road.

Winkleman’s five innings featured six strikeouts. He allowed no runs on one hit and one walk but took the no decision.
Winkleman also doubled, walked once and had three RBIs at the plate. Derek Wermager collected one hit, one run, one RBI and one walk, Bauer and Milheiser each scored one run and Creighton Andrew walked once and scored one run.
Gabe Otto doubled and scored one run, Kreytein Wickliffe added one hit and one run and Carter Lehrman scored one run and had one RBI.

Otto took the loss on the mound after allowing the winning run in the eighth. He tossed 1 2/3 innings and surrendered one earned run on three hits and one hit by pitch. He struck out three.
Mason Mendez allowed three runs — one earned — on one hit and two walks and Wickliffe surrendered four earned runs on two walks and two hit by pitches in 1/3 of an inning.
The Cardinals (0-2) had nine hits and committed two errors, while Bondurant-Farrar won the game with five hits and six errors.

The Bluejays (3-0) were led by Parker Ernst, who had two hits, one run, one RBI and one walk. Cole Miller doubled, scored two runs and was hit by one pitch and Peyton Hobbs registered the pitching win in relief.
Saydel 5, Newton 3
The Cardinals were limited to three hits and struck out 15 times at the plate during a 5-3 loss to Saydel on Wednesday.
The Eagles won the non-conference road matchup with a three-run fifth inning.
The season opener was scheduled for Monday but was postponed to Wednesday and moved to Newton due to rain and wet field conditions at Saydel.

The Eagles (2-1) had eight hits and three errors at the plate. The game was tied at 1-all after four innings as both teams scored once in the second.
Newton scored twice in the sixth with a 5-1 deficit but couldn’t complete the rally.
Milheiser and Otto led the offense with one hit and one hit by pitch. Andrew doubled, Lane Rozendaal walked once, scored one run and stole two bases and Lehrman walked once and scored two runs.
Landry Rausch walked twice and Winkleman drew one walk. The Cardinals finished with five walks and five steals in the loss.

Winkleman tossed one inning, but Lehrman took the pitching loss after allowing four earned runs on four hits and two walks in two innings. Lehrman struck out one.
Braydon Boston led Saydel (2-1) with one hit, two walks, two runs and two steals and Turner Bennett had two hits, one walk and one RBI. Brady Hicks doubled twice.
Adam Mein earned the pitching win after allowing three earned runs on three hits with four walks in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out 13 and hit one batter.
