EDDYVILLE — Only two individuals can score points in a varsity track and field meet. But the Lynnville-Sully boys track and field team tripled up in a lot of events during the Rocket Relays on April 29.
The Hawks won 10 events, registered 25 top-three finishes and won the Class B Division championship with 221 points.

Dawson James won the shot put and discus, and the Hawks dominated the field events.
Blake Wilmesmeier, Colton Alberts, Terran Gosselink and Jack Bowlin also won individual events and the Hawks scored wins in the 4x100- and 4x800-meter and the distance medley and shuttle hurdle relays.
The Hawks’ 221 points was plenty clear of Colfax-Mingo (162) in second and the rest of the six-team field included Montezuma (107), the Ottumwa JV (42), Moulton-Udell (18) and the EBF JV (8).
The Hawks went 1-2 in the 3,200, 400 hurdles, long jump and discus.
James won the shot put with a throw of 41 feet, 11 inches but Cameyon James was third with a toss of 36-5. James (127-1) and Wyatt Mathis (career-best 119-0) went 1-2 in the discus.
Bowlin (19-7 1/4) and Ethan Dunsbergen (career best 19-3 1/2) went 1-2 in the long jump and Connor Deal (5-10), Terran Gosselink (5-6), Trace Carlson (career-best 5-4) and Ashton Rozendaal (career-best 5-4) finished 2-3-4-5 in the high jump.

The winning 4x100 relay team featured Jaiden Richards, Jace Johnson, Dunsbergen and Bowlin won the race in a season-best 46.31 seconds. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Sawyer Veldhuizen, Rozendaal, Michael Spooner and Matthew Mintle won the race in 1:07.49.
Gosselink, Hendrick Lowry, Wilmesmeier and Alberts won the 4x800 in 8:50.9 and Sam Terlouw, Madden Gunsalaus, Keegan Schnell and Tyler Routier placed third in 10:01.
Jordan Dunsbergen, Deal, Ethan Dunsbergen and Lowry won the distance medley relay in 3:59.64 and the sprint medley relay team of Burt Johnson, Mintle, Richards and Jace Johnson placed second in a season-best 1:41.54.
The 4x400 relay team was third with Terlouw, Evan Arkema, Andrew Arkema and Carlson. They finished the race in 4:06.95.
The Hawks tripled up again in the 400, 800 and 1,600. Spooner (career-best 56.54), Terlouw (career-best 57.57) and Carlson (1:01.92) went 2-4-6 in the 400, Wilmesmeier (career-best 2:16.24), Evan Arkema (career-best 2:28.94 and Schnell (2:43.09) finished 1-3-5 and Lowry (5:03.15), Alberts (5:04.55) and Gunsalaus (career-best 5:34.1) came in 2-3-6 in the 1,600.

Alberts ran a career-best time of 10:25.12 to win the 3,200 and Wilmesmeier was the runner-up in a 10:33.82. Gosselink (57.82) and Veldhuizen (career-best 59.98) also went 1-2 in the 400 hurdles and Deal (career-best 16.76) and Veldhuizen (17.24) went 2-3 in the 110 high hurdles.
Burt Johnson’s career-best 12.55 placed him fourth in the 100 and Spooner (25.19) and Jordan Dunsbergen (career-best 25.23) were 4-6 in the 200.
L-S boys take second at West Marshall
STATE CENTER — Gosselink won the 400 hurdles, the Hawks won the distance medley relay and Lynnville-Sully placed second at the West Marshall Invitational on May 1.
The Hawks scored 125.5 points and trailed only the Ankeny Centennial JV in the standings. The Jaguars won the meet title with 182.5 points.
West Marshall (103.5), Baxter (91), East Marshall (85.5), Colfax-Mingo (52), Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont (41), Colo-NESCO (32.5) and Meskwaki Settlement School (14.5) completed the nine-team field.
“Finishing the night as runner-up to a 4A school’s JV squad and in front of a couple other teams who had beaten us at different times on the year, was a successful night, despite not really having very many season best performances or PRs,” L-S head boys track and field coach Darin Arkema said. “I was proud of the how the guys pressed on after the weather delay, continued to have themselves prepared for their events, and competed all night long.”

Burt Johnson, Richards, Spooner and Terlouw won the distance medley relay in 4:06.85.
Gosselink also won the 400 hurdles in 58.85 and Veldhuizen was fifth in 1:02.58.
One of the four runner-up finishes came in the 4x100 relay. The team of Richards, Dawson James, Mintle and Bowlin finished second in 46.98.
The sprint medley relay team of Jordan Dunsbergen, Mintle, Richards and Veldhuizen placed third in 1:44.19 and the 4x800 relay team of Lowry, Terlouw, Spooner and Ethan Dunsbergen took third in 9:22.25.
The shuttle hurdle relay team also was third. The team of Deal, Veldhuizen, Rozendaal and Gosselink took third in 1:06.44.
The other three runner-up finishes came from Jace Johnson (career-best 11.79) in the 100, Lowry (2:16.11) in the 800 and Wilmesmeier (4:58.22) in the 1,600.

Deal grabbed a pair of third-place finishes as he took home bronze medals in the 110 highs (16.51) and the high jump (5-8). Dawson James also finished third twice as he was third in the shot put with a toss of 42-8 and third in the discus with a toss of 115-0.
Wilmesmeier (10:43.27) and Alberts (11:05.64) finished 3-5 in the 3,200, Bowlin (18-1) took fourth in the long jump and Jace Johnson (24.0) came in with in the 200.
Hawks finish second at Cardinal Relays
NEWTON — Lowry posted a huge career-best time in the 1,600 and the L-S won the 4x200 relay in a season-best time during the Cardinal Relays on Friday.
Those were the Hawks’ only two wins, but L-S posted 10 top-three finishes and placed second as a team inside H.A. Lynn Stadium.
The Cardinals won the meet with 217 points. Lynnville-Sully (127) and Pleasantville (105) also were in front of Colfax-Mingo, which scored 89 points in fourth. Southeast Warren (61), North Mahaska (27) and Twin Cedars (21) completed the field.
“The guys kept things rolling tonight, combining all their efforts for the second runner-up team finish of the week, with us trying some different looks and still using these final few meets before state qualifying to find the best fit and maybe see some improved performances,” Arkema said. “They once again showed our depth, and the fact that we have a lot of guys who are really close on times over a lot of events.”

Lowry’s career-best time of 4:48.94 won the 1,600 and the L-S shuttle hurdle relay team of Deal, Veldhuizen, Rozendaal and Gosselink posted their second-best time of the season at 1:03.18. That won the race, but Newton was disqualified after a false start.
Sam Terlouw, Trace Carlson, Madden Gunsaulus and Tyler Routier placed second in the 4x800 in 9:19.86 and the distance medley relay team of Burt Johnson, Mintle, Lowry and Wilmesmeier finished second in a season-best 3:54.29.
Veldhuizen was second in the 400 hurdles in a career-best 59.04 and Alberts placed second in the 3,200 in 11:02.1. Keegan Schnell gave the Hawks double points in the event as he was fifth in a career-best 12:55.74.
“Hendrick’s PR in the 1,600 time was a long time in the making, bettering a time he ran his sophomore year and got the victory in doing so,” Arkema said. “It was great to see him run fast as he nears finishing his high school career.
“Shuttle hurdle dropped another fast time even though it was a little over half a second slower than Tuesday night.”
Three of the four third-place finishes came in relays, but Terlouw (2:11.52) and Jace Johnson (2:16.37) went 3-5 in the 800, and both ran career-best times.

Dawson James hit a career-best throw of 131-0 in the discus and placed fourth, Bowlin finished fourth in the long jump with a leap of 18-5 and James was sixth in the shot put with a toss of 41-6 1/2.
“Dawson climbed over the 130 foot threshold in the discus for the first time,” Arkema said. “His improvement in that event this year has been tremendous.”
Deal (5-10) and Rozendaal (career-best 5-4) were 5-6 in the high jump, too.
Richards, Ethan Dunsbergen, Gosselink and Bowlin set a season-best time of 1:35.03 and placed second in the 4x200 relay.
The Hawks’ sprint medley relay team of Burt Johnson, Mintle, Jordan Dunsbergen and Spooner finished third in 1:43.91 and the 4x100 relay team of Richards, Bowlin, Ethan Dunsbergen and Dawson James took third in 46.42.
“I appreciate the 28 team members we have giving their efforts, and I hope they see the benefit of being together, challenging each other to improve and that we truly are a sum of the parts and better together than anyone of them alone,” Arkema said.

Hawks tie for second at West Marshall
STATE CENTER — Huyser won a pair of sprinting events, Isabelle Vos won the long jump with a career-best leap and the Hawks won the 4x800 relay during the West Marshall Coed Invitational on May 1.
The Hawks scored 124 points and tied the host Trojans in second. East Marshall won the meet championship with 139.5 points.
The rest of the eight-team field included South Hamilton (112), Baxter (88), Colfax-Mingo (73.5), Colo-NESCO (28) and Meskwaki Settlement School (23).
“We continued to see a lot of solid progress as we move into the final weeks of the season,” L-S head girls track and field coach Kevin Johnson said. “The Hawks had a good week.”
Huyser had two of the team’s four wins. She won the 200 in 27.59 and was first in the 400 in 1:03.92. Kate Harthoorn also placed third in the 400 in a career-best 1:07.21.
Isabelle Vos won the long jump in a career-best 15-6 1/2 and the 4x800 relay team also won in 10:46.10. That team included Kate Harthoorn, Brooke Harthoorn, Parkinson and Sharp.
The only individual runner-up finish came from Huyser in the high jump. She was second with a leap of 5-0.

The L-S 4x100 relay team of Lowry, Brooke Harthoorn, Hay and Tice placed second in 55.35 and the 4x200 relay quartet of Tice, Brooke Harthoorn, Hay and Lowry took second in 2:00.53.
The sprint medley relay team of Tice, Hay, Lowry and Isabelle Vos finished 2:00.76.
Kate Harthoorn, Norrish, Parkinson and Sharp finished third in 4:33.65 and Mandeesa Vos placed third in the 1,500 in 5:35.04.
The Hawks doubled up in a trio of events. Tice (14.12) and Cori Fisk (career-best 14.7) went 3-5 in the 100, Norrish (2:50.31) and Mandeesa Vos (career-best 2:50.74) placed 4-5 in the 800 and Norrish posted a career-best time of 12:27.44 and was fourth in the 3,000.
Hawks finish second at Cardinal Relays
NEWTON — Huyser and Mandeesa Vos claimed individual wins, the 4x800 relay team grabbed the gold medal and smashed their previous season-best time and the Hawks placed second at the Cardinal Relays on May 9.

Host Newton cruised to the team title with 211 points, but Lynnville-Sully scored 111 in second. North Mahaska (99.5) edged Colfax-Mingo (92.5) for third and the rest fo the seven-team field featured Pleasantville (81), Southeast Warren (52) and Dallas Center-Grimes (24).
DCG entered eight runners in the 1,500 and one Mustang competed in the 100 hurdles.
Huyser won the 100 in 12.8 and was second in the high jump (5-0) and 200. Her 200 time was clocked in a career-best 26.25.
Mandeesa Vos won the 3,000 in 11:43.73 and Isabelle Vos (15-3 1/2) placed third in the long jump.
Ther Hawks’ other win came in the 4x800 relay. The foursome of Parkinson, Brooke Harthoorn, Kate Harthoorn and Sharp posted a season-best time of 10:10.55, which ranks eighth in 1A. It was a season-best time by nearly 12 seconds.
The other three runner-up finishes came in relays. The distance medley relay team of Hay, Lowry, Parkinson and Sharp placed second in a season-best 4:37.75 and the sprint medley relay team of Fisk, Tice, Isabelle Vos and Lowry was second in a season-best 1:59.1.
