PELLA — Zach Felten grabbed the team’s lone win and several freshmen registered career-best performances during the Pella Dutch Coed Relays on Monday.
The Newton boys track and field team was limited to just four top-three finishes and scored 79 points. That placed the Cardinals fifth in the seven-team field.

Host Pella won the meet title with 204 points. Norwalk was second with 122 and PCM (115) and Knoxville (86) completed the top five. Pella Christian (42) and Oskaloosa (17) finished behind the Cardinals.
Felten’s winning throw in the discus covered 147 feet, 5 inches. The Cardinals did not finish second in any event.
Cade Bauer matched a career-best leap of 6-0 to place third in the high jump, Jackson Riney finished fifth in the discus with a career-best throw of 127-7 and Josh Lampe posted a career-best leap of 19-9 1/4 and placed sixth in the long jump.

Colter Shaw’s career-best 12.01 seconds led a 3-4 finish for Newton in the 100-meter dash. Austin Arauz was fourth in 12.03.
The Cardinals also doubled up in the 400 hurdles. Drew Bauer edged Mason Mendez for fourth. Drew Bauer finished the race in a career-best 1 minute, .42 seconds and Mendez was fifth in 1:00.63.
Arauz (15.82) finished fourth in the 110 high hurdles and Reagan Maki took sixth in the 400 with a career-best time of 55.35.

Newton’s shuttle hurdle relay team of Arauz, Drew Bauer, Cade Bauer and Lampe placed third in 1:03.02.
The Cardinals rested several varsity regulars as they gear up to compete in a Class 3A state qualifying meet at 4 p.m. on Thursday in Mount Vernon.
