GRIMES — Ethan Valtman improved to 10-2 and Damien Smith stayed unbeaten at No. 5 singles, but the Newton boys tennis team lost 8-3 to Dallas Center-Grimes on Thursday.
The Cardinals won twice in singles during the Little Hawkeye Conference matchup.

Valtman won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 1 singles and Smith rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 10-8 victory at No. 5 singles.
The other win came at No. 2 doubles where Valtman and Ethan Freese won 7-6 (9-7), 6-0.
Newton once again played without senior Ezra Bartell, who missed his second straight meet due to an illness.
Garett Crandall stayed in the varsity singles lineup but lost in three sets at No. 6 singles. Evan Marshall dropped his second set 7-6 at No. 2 singles.

Evan Marshall and Kaden Marshall lost the second set of their doubles match, 6-4, and Zane Munger and Keary Sanger dropped a pair of 6-4 sets.
Smith and Crandall won their first set 6-4 but fell in three after dropping the final two sets 6-2, 10-8.
Newton, DCG girls tennis suspended due to rain
Newton and DCG played in a girls conference match at Aurora Heights Park on Thursday, but the dual was suspended due to heavy rain.
The matchup never got to doubles play. Morgan Frehse leads her singles match 1-0 after 6-3 victory in the first set.

Brooklyn Sterling is currently tied 6-6 in her first set, while Paige Benson, Alexis Dirksen and Emersyn Gross all trail 1-0 after losing their first sets.
Newton head girls tennis coach Erick Zehr said the matchup will be made up on at around 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. It also will be Senior Night part two.
