Late goal sends Carlisle past Newton boys soccer

Cardinals drop fourth straight, fall to host Wildcats

Javin Doland

CARLISLE — Javin Doland made nine saves for the Newton boys soccer team on Friday, but the Cardinals gave up a goal in the final 10 minutes during 1-0 loss to Carlisle.

Newton put 10 of its 15 shots on goal, but the Cardinals were shut out for a sixth time this season.

“It was our best shot efficiency game of the season,” Newton head boys soccer coach Zach Jensen said. “We just need to put the ball in the back of the net. That’s the objective of the game. We have to keep the ball better in the final third.”

Kael Streeter scored his 10th goal of the season for the Wildcats, who celebrated Senior Night before the match.

Jensen was happy with his team’s defense, and liked the Micah Mattes defended Streeter one-on-one throughout the match.

“Micah Mattes man marked their biggest threat and did an incredible job on him,” Jensen said. “He ended up getting a goal against us, but we defended well and shifted well as a team.”

The match was scoreless at halftime. Streeter’s goal came in the 71st minute.

The matchup between Newton (3-8-2) and Carlisle is the first in the Bound era. The Wildcats (4-3-4) handed the Cardinals their fourth straight loss.

“If you watched this match as just a fan of soccer, it was a great game from two sides who battled all night,” Jensen said.
