Newton boys can’t overcome slow start against Pella

Tough shooting night plagues Cardinals in loss to state-ranked Dutch

PELLA — The Cardinals turned the ball over only nine times and made 8 treys, but a slow start and a tough shooting night plagued Newton in an LHC road loss to Class 3A No. 9 Pella on Friday.

Newton fell behind by double digits after one and the margin grew after the second and third during a 72-51 defeat.

The Cardinals shot 37.3 percent from the floor, made 8-of-22 from 3-point range and connected on 5-of-9 from the free-throw line.

Landon Bozarth led Newton with 10 points, three rebounds and two assists and Caden Klein tallied seven points, two rebounds and two assists.

Creighton Andrew scored a career-best eight points, Dawson Maki had five points and five assists and Micah Mattes put in a career-high five points.

Cade Bauer totaled two assists and two steals, Grant Osby chipped in four points and three boards and Christian Ergenbright scored three points.

Henry Allen scored the first four points and grabbed the first two rebounds of his prep career.

Jack McGuire and Griffin Simpson led Pella with 14 points each, while Brayden Traetow totaled 10 points and five boards and Austin Schulte collected 10 points and four boards.

The Dutch, who also got eight boards from Tyson Barnes, shot 55 percent from the floor, made 8-of-22 from 3 and connected on 8-of-9 from the foul line. Pella (12-5, 7-2) committed 14 turnovers.

The Dutch, who have won five in a row, improved to 30-9 against Newton since 2006.
