The Newton-Colfax-Mingo-Pella boys’ swim team got overall wins from Finn Martin, Ethan Comer and Caleb Punt and the Cardinals set a new school record in a relay, but Boone was just too good during their matchup with the Toreadors on Tuesday.
NCMP split its two head-to-head battles inside the Newton YMCA as it defeated Des Moines East 92-63 but lost to Boone 95-65. The Toreadors dunked the Scarlets 114-44 in their matchup.
Martin won a pair of freestyle events and broke his own previous records in the process, Comer won the 100 breaststroke and both Cardinals helped NCMP set a new school record in the 200-meter freestyle relay.
Boone won all three relays, but NCMP got wins against East in each of them. The Toreadors were the overall winners in seven events.
Evan Marshall, Comer, MacK Copeland and Martin finished second overall in the 200 freestyle relay with a school-record time of 1 minute, 42.53 seconds.
The previous record of 1:43.61 was set in 2015 and NCMP head coach Lucas Warner swam the anchor leg.
Punt, Kaden Marshall, Heath Anderson and Derek Wermager finished second against East and fourth against Boone with a time of 2:02.02.
The 400 freestyle relay team of Evan Marshall, Punt, Hudson Meyer and Drew Fuller placed first against East and second against Boone with a time of 4:15.17.
Boone went 1-2 in the 200 medley relay and East finished third overall. NCMP’s team of Brody Van Zee, Anderson, Wermager and Kaden Marshall was next in 2:27.24.
Martin won both the 50 and 100 freestyle. His winning time in the 50 was clocked in 23.4 seconds and he won the 100 freestyle in 51.8. Both times broke his own school records in the events.
Evan Marshall and Copeland were second against East and third against Boone in the 100 and 50 freestyle, respectively, with times of 1:02.09 and 27.01.
Comer won the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.35. Kaden Marshall gave NCMP a 1-2 finish against East and he was fourth versus Boone in 1:31.79.
Punt’s win in the 200 freestyle was clocked in 2:17.9. Blaine Brooks finished third against East with a time of 2:40.45.
Comer scored a win over East and finished second overall in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:29.93.
Fuller was first against East and second overall in the 400 freestyle. His time was 4:58.23. Copeland gave the Cardinals a 1-2 finish against East and a 2-3 tally against Boone with a time of 5:09.03.
Meyer (1:13.07) was third overall and Fuller (1:13.97) finished fourth in the 100 backstroke. They were 2-3 in the battle with East.
Punt gave NCMP a runner-up finish against East in the 100 butterfly. He hit the wall in 1:14.68.
Notes: NCMP got junior varsity wins from Meyer (100 freestyle), Anderson (100 breaststroke), Trace McClellan (400 freestyle) and Evan Marshall (50 freestyle). Marshall and Anderson were 1-2 in the 50 freestyle.
