Alex Riney and Payton Carkhuff had career highs, 10 Cardinals scored and the Newton girls basketball team cruised past Des Moines East on Tuesday.
The Cardinals led from the opening tip, held the Scarlets to single digits in all four quarters and dominated the non-conference contest, 67-15.
The 52-point margin of victory set a new school record. It broke the previous record of 43 points set back on Nov. 18, 2016.
Newton led East 30-3 after the opening quarter and outscored its visitors 14-3 in the second, 12-2 in the third and 11-7 in the fourth.
Carkhuff and Riney each scored a career-high 13 points and Tori White put in 10 for the winners.
Riney added nine rebounds and five assists and she was 6-of-7 from the floor. Carkhuff tallied three rebounds and two assists and made 3-of-4 from 3-point range.
White grabbed seven rebounds, dished out four assists and swiped four steals, Hailey Dickerson contributed six points and four rebounds and Bella Winther produced four points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals off the bench.
Brooke Garvis finished with six points and five boards off the bench. Newton’s bench production also included a career-high six points from Addyson Cibula, four points and two boards from Sophia Coady, two rebounds and two steals from Camryn Klein, three rebounds from Evie Main and two boards from Emerson Ray.
Irene Olaso, a foreign exchange student, scored three points in her varsity debut off the bench.
The Cardinals (4-1) shot 46.3 percent from the floor, made 4-of-12 from 3 and connected on 1-of-7 from the free-throw line. They turned the ball over nine times, swiped 14 steals and grabbed 22 offensive rebounds.
Des Moines East (0-5) is being outscored 347-78 through five games this winter. The Scarlets are averaging 15.6 points per contest.
