BOONE — Things got out of control late for the Newton baseball team during its non-conference road loss to Boone on Wednesday.
The game was tied after three and the Cardinals took a small lead with a run in the fifth, but the Toreadors used a two-run fifth to go in front and then ended the game early with a nine-run sixth during a 12-2 victory.
The Cardinals were out-hit 12-7 and both teams committed three errors.
Skyler Milheiser and Mason Mendez both had two hits to lead the offense, while Cade Bauer, Derek Wermager and John Frietsch all had one hit.
Milheiser doubled and had two RBIs, Landry Rausch walked once and scored one run and Braelyn Parks scored one run. Milheiser now leads the team with 34 total bases.
Eli Stewart (0-6) took the loss for Newton (9-21) after allowing six earned runs on seven hits, three walks and three hit batters in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out three.
Wermager came into the game in the sixth but didn’t get out of the inning. Boone scored six unearned runs off him and Wermager allowed five hits.
Boone (16-14) was led by Noah Davies, who finished with two doubles, two runs and two RBIs. Martin Smith finished with three hits and three RBIs.
