Eight Cardinals won an individual event, the hosts won four relays and the Newton girls track and field team swept the field events for the first time maybe ever during the annual Cardinal Relays on Thursday.

Newton also doubled up in eight events and the dominating effort resulted in a 236-point night.

The Cardinals won their second home meet of each spring for at least the fifth straight season.

“It’s nice to come out and get the win on the home track, but the performances were the really exciting part,” Newton head girls track and field coach Rachelle Tipton said. “There were 23 personal-best performances tonight.”

Lynnville-Sully won the 4x100 relay and was second twice. That resulted in a third-place team finish. It was the fourth time in five seasons that the Hawks were at least third at this meet.

“We continue to build as we work towards a strong finish to the season. “It was a great night for the Hawks,” L-S head girls track and field coach Kevin Johnson said. “It’s good to see the athletes are getting more confident in their abilities as they work to finish the season strong.”

Newton won the team championship with 236 points and Colfax-Mingo scored 129.5 points in second. The rest of the seven-team field featured Lynnville-Sully (94), North Mahaska (73), Southeast Warren (45), Pleasantville (36.5) and Twin Cedars (20).

Abby Bruce and Tori White won two individual events and they joined Lauren Clarke and Gracie Clayton as Cardinals who were part of three victories for the night.

Clayton also was one of five athletes who were recognized for Senior Night. That group also included Chloe Rorabaugh, Cameron Sharp, Claire Breuer and Olivia Pelock.

“We began the process of saying goodbye to our five seniors, who have brought a lot of heart to this team,” Tipton said. “It has been a privilege to see their growth both on and off the track and was a lot of fun to see them shine one last time on their home track.”
