Newton boys claim fifth straight Cardinal Relays title

Lynnville-Sully places second, Colfax-Mingo fifth at H.A. Lynn Stadium

Caden Klein won three events, the Cardinals registered victories in four relays and the Newton boys track and field team won its annual Cardinal Relays for the fifth straight season.

Newton totaled 11 wins, doubled up in 10 events and scored 231 points after registering 24 top-three finishes.

Lynnville-Sully was held to one victory but six runner-up finishes pushed the Hawks to a second-place team finish for the fifth year in a row, and Colfax-Mingo was fifth as the third area school.

“This is always a meet we have some of our better performance of the season it seems like and tonight was no exception,” L-S head boys track and field coach Darin Arkema said.

A few Cardinals had light nights on the track, but Klein won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter hurdles, while Reilly Trease won the 110 high hurdles and was part of two relay victories.

Lance Zaabel also won the 3,200, Alameen Shanto posted a career-best leap to win the long jump and Nick Milburn eclipsed the 50-foot mark again to win the shot put.

Lynnville-Sully’s win came from Connor Deal in the high jump, and the Hawks also were second in three relays.

Xavier Woods headlined Colfax-Mingo with a pair of third-place finishes and the Tigerhawks posted season-best times in the 4x400 and sprint medley relays.

Klein (11.27 seconds), Nate Lampe (11.47) and Nick Thomason (11.56) all posted career-best times in the 100 and placed 1-3-4.

The top two finishers in each individual event score points for the team race.

The Cardinals finished 1-2-3 in the 110 high hurdles as Trease won with a career-best time of 15.16 seconds and Austin Arauz (16.93) and Cade Bauer (17.44) registered career-best times in second and third, respectively.

Klein (22.45) edged Ergenbright (22.54) to win the 200 and Ali Yahia (23.94) finished fifth. Klein and Ergenbright both posted career-best times.

Klein’s final win came in the 400 hurdles as he won in 56.54. Mason Mendez turned in a career-best time of 1 minute, 0.75 seconds in fourth and Drew Bauer (1:04.41) placed fifth.

Zaabel won the 3,200 with a career-best time of 10:32.35 and Noah Tremel (12:21.43) posted a career-best time to place fifth.

The Cardinals went 1-2-4-5 in the shot put and 1-4 in the long jump.

Milburn won the shot put with a throw of 50 feet, 9 inches and Zach Felten was the runner-up with a career-best toss of 42-1. Coleby Revell (40-5) was fourth and Koltt Ahn (career-best 39-2) placed fifth.

Shanto won the long jump with a career-best leap of 20-8 1/2. Boston Cupples also registered a career-best mark as his leap of 18-2 put him in fourth.

Milburn (128-0) and Revell (career-best 120-10) went 2-4 in the discus and Isaiah Hansen (5-8) and Cade Bauer (career-best 5-8) were 2-4 in the high jump.

Shanto (54.53) and Dawson Maki (55.2) posted career-best times in the 400 in second and third, respectively.

Javin Doland finished the 800 in third with a career-best time of 2:08.86 and Landon Menninga was fifth in 2:14.89. Asher Wood (4:59.84) also placed third in the 1,600.

Newton’s relay wins came in the 4x100, 4x200, 4x400 and shuttle hurdle.

In the 4x100, the team of Thomason, Trease, Hansen and Nathan Milburn won the race in 44.63 seconds.

Yahia, Jace Auen, Trey Davidson and Cupples won the 4x200 in 1:36.88 and Maki, Shanto, Yahia and Jake Mace-Maynard won the 4x400 in 3:46.44.

The winning shuttle hurdle relay team featured Trease, Cade Bauer, Arauz and Nathan Milburn and they won the race in 1:03.67. The Cardinals’ second team of Drew Bauer, Cupples, Mendez and Evan Bebout did not score team points but finished third in 1:12.84.

The distance medley and 4x800 relays both were second.

Doland, Wood, Levi Zaabel and Menninga finished the 4x800 in 8:43.69, which was a season-best time by nearly 34 seconds.

Dalton Mowbray, Cole Smith, Jaydon Huggins and Mace-Maynard finished the distance medley relay in 4:11.07.

Deal won the high jump for the Hawks with a career-best leap of 5-10. Lynnville-Sully also got individual second-place finishes from Terran Gosselink (career-best 59.15 seconds) in the 400 hurdles, Hendrick Lowry (4:50.99) in the 1,600 and Blake Wilmesmeier (11:11.49) in the 3,200. Wilmesmeier’s time was a career best by 32 seconds.

Dawson James (41-4 1/2) also was third in the shot put, Austin Larson (18.14) finished fourth in the 110 highs, Michael Spooner (career-best 2:12.59) took fourth in the 800 and Ethan Dunsbergen (career-best 56.1) ended up fifth in the 400.

The Hawks were second in the 4x100, 4x200 and shuttle hurdle relays and placed third in the distance medley.

Corder Noun Harder, Jaiden Richards and Gavin Fisk teamed up in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays. James helped the 4x100 team post a season-best time of 45.84 and Isaac Ver Ploeg anchored the 4x200 relay to a season-best 1:38.52.

The shuttle hurdle relay team posted a season-best time of 1:08.45 with Larson, Deal, Gosselink and Terrion Carter.

The distance medley relay featured Brooks Utech, Jordan Dunsbergen, Carter Tice and Wilmesmeier and they finished in 4:28.37

“It was an all around good night and strong efforts from our team to earn second place behind a good Newton squad,” Arkema said. “I love that there was no let down after our conference meet from Tuesday night. It shows their desire to improve and recognize the opportunity to continually better themselves, especially with just a week remaining until state qualifying meet.”

Woods was third in both the high jump (5-8) and 400 hurdles (1:00.71) to lead Colfax-Mingo.

He also anchored the sprint medley relay team to third in a season-best time of 1:43.16. That foursome also featured Isaiah Baucom, Fisher Grove and Wyatt Thornton.

Grove, Woods, Thornton and Sully Wilkins placed third in the 4x400 with a season-best time of 3:51.89.

Lynnville-Sully (125) edged North Mahaska (121) for second in the team standings. The Warhawks were third for the third time in the last four years.

Southeast Warren (86), Colfax-Mingo (60), Pleasantville (54) and Twin Cedars (11) completed the seven-team field.

The meet also served as Newton’s Senior Night. Lampe, Wood, Menninga, Mowbray, Nathan Milburn, Cody Klein, Curtis Payne, Thomas Tidball and Cole Walter all were recognized midway through the meet.
