PCM headlines area golfers at Colfax Country Club

Cardinals finish fourth at Colfax-Mingo, sixth at Gilbert

Easton Van Veen

COLFAX — All five teams in the Colfax-Mingo Tigerhawk Boys Golf Invitational shot under their 18-hole averages on Friday.

But Pella Christian placed its top five golfers in the first 11 positions and came out on top of a tournament that featured three area squads.

PCM put its first five golfers in the top 16 and posted its second-best score of the season to finish in second.

Newton had six scores in the 80s for the first time this season but settled for fourth, while Colfax-Mingo completed the five-team field.

Peyton Rozendaal

The Eagles came into the day with the third-best average in Class 2A. They were four strokes below that at the par 72 Colfax Country Club as they won the tournament with a 309.

The Mustangs were four strokes back in second with a 313, while Pleasantville (328) was 10 shots under its season average in third. Newton shot 332 in fourth and the host Tigerhawks finished fifth with a 399.

Pella Christian and PCM both had three scores in the 70s and five totaled a score of 82 or better, but the Eagles won in part because Eliot Menninga turned in a 1-under-par 71 to win medalist honors.

Easton Van Veen led PCM with a 74 as the runner-up medalist and Nick Farver shot a 77 in third. Van Veen carded back-to-back 37 splits, while Farver and Tate Tangeman had 37s on their front nine.

Joe Earles

Tangeman’s 79 was good enough for sixth, while Charlie Ford had the final counting score with an 83.

Pete Kiernan (84) and Jeffrey McDanel (87) posted non-counting scores.

Jackson Price led Newton in eighth. He shot an 80 and his back-nine score was a 38.

Kinnick Pritchard ended up 10th with an 81 and Grant Osby carded a career-best 83. Both golfers turned in front-nine scores of 40.

Peyton Rozendaal and Lincoln Peterson had the final counting scores with 88s. That was a career best for Peterson. Ethan Pageler had a non-counting 89.

Colfax-Mingo was led by Cael Bracewell’s 96 and Joe Earles turned in a career-best 98. Cason Fitch (99) and Jared Lewis (106) had the other counting scores.

Nick Farver

Shane Hostetter (108) and Luke Allen (110) posted non-counting scores.

Price leads Cardinals to sixth at Gilbert Invitational

AMES — Newton faced another tough field at Ames Golf & Country Club on Saturday.

Two Cardinals posted career-best scores and three had scores of 80 or better, but Newton finished sixth in the nine-team field at the Gilbert Invitational.

Price finished with a 76 after carding back-to-back splits of 38. But that was only good enough for a tie for 14th as four of the best teams in 3A and six which rank in the top 21 in 18-hole average were in the field.

Host Gilbert won its tournament with a 293. The Tigers, who have the sixth best average in 3A, had six golfers who shot in the 70s.

North Polk (295), Knoxville (299), Ballard (309) and Winterset (314) completed the top five. Knoxville, North Polk and Ballard all rank in the top 10 in 3A in 18-hole averages.

Grant Osby

Newton shot a 324 in sixth. The Cardinals were better than Nevada (328), Bondurant-Farrar (342) and Boone (353).

Three other golfers joined Price with a 76. Pritchard and Rozendaal both shot 80s for the Cardinals. Pritchard had even 40 splits, while Rozendaal’s score was a career best.

Peterson had the other counting score with a career-best 88. Osby (89), Carter Maki (89), Pageler (92) and Kayden Westlund (96) posted non-counting scores.

Evan Smith of Knoxville won medalist honors with a 1-under-par 70. Gilbert’s Ryan Lynch and North Polk’s Chase Krings turned in 72s.
