Norwalk grabs lead in singles, holds off Newton girls

Cardinals win twice in doubles during loss to Warriors

NORWALK — Madison Rinehart won her singles match in straight sets and the Cardinals won twice in doubles, but the Newton girls tennis team fell to Norwalk on Thursday.

The Warriors went 5-1 in singles and closed out the Little Hawkeye Conference home win with an advantage in doubles during an 8-3 victory.

The Cardinals (3-2, 2-1 in the conference) were a few sets away from winning the matchup, but Norwalk (4-3, 3-1) had four three-set wins.

Rinehart won her No. 3 singles match 6-4, 6-3 and Avery Potter and Sloan Brodersen scored a 6-3, 7-6 (7-0) win at No. 5 doubles.

Newton’s lone three-set win came at No. 4 doubles where Paige Benson and Brooklyn Sterling won 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.

Lauryn Garrett, Olivia Hotchkin and Izzy Wilson all lost in three sets. Garrett lost her third set 10-8 and Hotchkin was edged 12-10.

Rinehart and Lex Dirksen also lost in three sets with the third set being 10-7.
