Newton girls finish ninth in tough field at Toni Dickey invite

ANKENY — The Newton girls golf team battled in tough conditions on Thursday during the Toni Dickey Invitational.

The Cardinals were led by Evie Main at the par 71 Otter Creek Golf Course, but Newton finished ninth in the 12-team field.

Ames won the tournament title with a 343. Southeast Polk (360), Ankeny Centennial (366), Marshalltown (370) and Dowling Catholic (376) completed the top five.

The Cardinals shot 413 in ninth, which was three strokes better than Clear Lake. They also had a better score than Dallas Center-Grimes (437) and Des Moines East (451). Indianola (382), West Des Moines Valley (385) and Ankeny (390) finished sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.

Main led Newton with a 97, while Addison Ratcliff (102) and Addison Hook (102) were next and the final counting score was Eva Pak’s 112. The 102 matched a career-best for Hook.

Addison Van Maanen (115) and Kalleigh Berndt (122) turned in non-counting scores.
