Berndt’s career best leads Newton girls at Williamsburg

Cardinals finish third at Stone Creek Golf Club

WILLIAMSBURG — Kalleigh Berndt posted a career-best score and Addison Hook and Addie Ratcliff joined her in the top 10, but the Newton girls golf team finished third in a road triangular on Friday.

Host Williamsburg won the meet that was rescheduled following an earlier postponement. The Raiders carded a 188 at Stone Creek Golf Club.

West Delaware (208) was 20 shots back in second and Newton finished third with a 215.

“I’m very proud of how the girls played on a new course with lush fairways we aren’t particularly used to and unmowed greens,” Newton head girls golf coach Nicole George said. “They had to adapt their playing style slightly in order to account for these differences, but they handled it well.”

The three teams played the red tees on the par 36 front nine. The best individual score was a 44, which was turned in by three different golfers.

Berndt led the Cardinals with a career-best 52. She was seventh overall, while Ratcliff and Hook each shot 53 to finish eighth and 10th, respectively.

Addison Van Maanen ended up 11th with a 57 and Evie Main turned in a non-counting 62 in 15th. No. 2 golfer Eva Pak missed her second straight meet with an illness.

“Kalleigh Berndt played some beautiful golf and shot her career-best score,” George said. “It was so fun to watch. I’m excited to see how the girls improve even next week with our three meets.”

Four Williamsburg golfers shot in the 40s and that quartet finished in the top six individually.

West Delaware’s Maylin Coates was the meet medalist with a 44. Jaisel Bott of Williamsburg was the runner-up with a 44 and Andrea Wubbena of West Delaware also shot a 44 in third.
