Newton boys win team title at Osky Relays

Cardinals claim eight wins at Lacey Stadium

OSKALOOSA — Caden Klein won a pair of individual events, Reilly Trease and Christian Ergenbright both were part of two relay wins and the Newton boys track and field team won the 95th Osky Relays on Thursday.

The Cardinals registered eight wins and scored 135 points at the top of the standings at Lacey Stadium. They edged rival Pella by eight points.

Five of the eight victories came in individual events and Newton finished 1-2-4 in the 100-meter dash and went 1-2 in the 400.

Pella scored 127 points in second, while the rest of the six-team field included Knoxville (100), Ottumwa (90), Oskaloosa (73) and Des Moines North (62).

Klein’s wins came in the 400 and 400 hurdles. He won the 400 in a career-best 51.37 seconds and Curtis Payne was the runner-up in a career-best 53.29.

Klein won the 400 hurdles in a career-best 55.57, Qhjuan Coley sprinted to a win in the 100 in 11.61 and Ergenbright won the 200 in a season-best 23.08.

Klein’s time in the 400 hurdles was faster than what he ran last year at the state meet when he placed seventh in Class 3A.

The final individual win came in the shot put as Nick Milburn reached a career-best distance of 48 feet, 2 1/2 inches.

The relay wins came in the sprint medley, shuttle hurdle and 4x100.

In the sprint medley, the team of Jace Auen, Nathan Milburn, Ali Yahia and Ergenbright won the race in 1 minute, 43.44 seconds.

Ergenbright also anchored the 4x100 relay team to a win. The other runners were Coley, Nick Thomason and Trease and they hit the finish line in 44.77, which would have been the third-fastest time last season.

Trease, Austin Arauz, Klein and Payne won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:04.53. Trease and Payne also were 2-5 in the 110 high hurdles with times of 15.71 and 18.83, respectively.

The Cardinals finished second three times. Nathan Milburn was the runner-up in the 100 in a career-best 11.76.

Thomason finished fourth in 11.83, but he was not awarded any team points. He also placed sixth in the 200 with a time of 24.89.

Newton was third in the 4x800 relay. The team of Levi Zaabel, Asher Wood, Creighton Andrew and Jake Mace-Maynard hit the finish line in 9:33.52.

Lance Zaabel placed fourth in the 3,200 in a career-best time of 10:46.26, Zach Felten took fourth in the discus with a career-best throw of 115-1 and Isaiah Hansen took third in the high jump with a leap of 5-8.

Alameen Shanto had the final top-six finish. He was sixth in the long jump with a mark of 18-4 3/4.
