Newton senior Caleb Mattes signed with the Bethel University football team on Monday. Mattes plans to play safety for the Royals and chose the school over Central College and Wheaton College. "It's a very Christian and faith based university that has amazing people, professors and coaches who put Jesus first in all that they do," Mattes said. "They run a three-safety defense so it works out nice for me. I think I will be a run-first defender who is able to get into the box." Caleb Mattes' older brother Adam currently plays basketball at Bethel, but that didn't factor into his decision. "It sure makes it a lot greater of a decision," Caleb Mattes said. "It'll be super cool to be up there with him." Caleb Mattes also played basketball and soccer at Newton. "Being on a football team is one of the coolest things," Mattes said. "There's 80-100 people all working for the same goal and that's pretty amazing. Bethel has an amazing coaching staff who cares for their players' hearts and how they live life." Caleb was joined at his signing by his parents, Steve and Lori, and his brothers (back row, from left) Brennan, Adam and Micah. He plans to major in education and minor in communications.
