L-S wrestlers end season at district tournament

Fourth-place finishes highlight Tigerhawks’ day in Truro

TRURO — It was a tough day for the Lynnville-Sully wrestling team at the Class 1A District 3 tournament on Saturday.

The Hawks entered seven wrestlers into the 11-team field but finished 11th with 28.5 points. The team’s best finishers were Hunter Van Wyk and Ben Squires, who both were fourth at their respective weights.

Host Interstate 35 won the district championship with 164 points. The Roadrunners crowned two champions.

Nodaway Valley (128), Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas (121), Martensdale-St. Marys (118) and BGM (98) rounded out the top five.

The rest of the field featured Cardinal Community (80), Moravia (71), Wayne (71), East Union (49), Montezuma (35.5) and Lynnville-Sully (28.5).

Nodaway Valley and Martensdale-St. Marys each had a tournament-high three champions. The top two finishers in each class at each 1A district advanced to the state tournament.

Van Wyk was 2-2 at 120. His fourth-place day included one pin and one technical fall.

Squires (15-12) was 2-2 with two pins at 285. One of his losses came against eighth-ranked Trenton Warner (46-2) of Nodaway Valley.

Kimball Elliott (126) and Wyatt Mathis (175) both finished 1-2 at their weights, while Trevor Van Wyk (138) and Austin Larson (165) were 0-2 and Burt Johnson (132) was 0-1.

Elliott (30-9) lost to seventh-ranked Brayden Scheffers (33-6) of Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas in the semifinals.
