Newton girls can’t overcome slow start in loss to Bondurant-Farrar

Cardinals commit 29 turnovers, miss 11 free throws in loss to Bluejays

BONDURANT — The Newton girls’ basketball team was within striking distance with Bondurant-Farrar at halftime on Thursday.

But the Cardinals struggled in the third quarter and were plagued by 29 turnovers in their 52-34 non-conference road loss.

The Bluejays led 13-9 after one quarter, fell behind by eight at halftime and were outscored 16-4 in the third.

Bella Winther scored a career-high nine points and grabbed two rebounds to lead the Cardinals.

Tori White added seven points, nine boards and two assists, Payton Carkhuff tallied eight points, two rebounds and two steals and Alex Riney grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists.

Evie Main put in six points and Haylie Ryan collected three points and two rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 43.5 percent from the floor, made 7-of-14 from 3-point range and sunk only 7-of-18 from the free-throw line. Newton (7-14) out-rebounded the Bluejays 25-19.

Aubrie Haynes scored 12 points and Chesney Steenhoek added 10 points and six boards to lead the Bluejays. Bondurant-Farrar (9-12) made 5-of-21 from 3 and made 9-of-15 from the foul line but only committed 11 turnovers.
