Newton boys make 17 free throws in win over Webster City

Cardinals can’t overcome slow start in loss to Class 4A Norwalk

WEBSTER CITY — Neither Newton nor Webster City had an advantage in the middle two quarters of their non-conference boys’ basketball game on Monday.

But the Cardinals were better in the significant offensive categories and gained an advantage with superior first and fourth frames during a 54-47 road win.

Newton led 11-8 after one quarter and outscored the Lynx 17-13 in the fourth. The two teams played to a 26-all tie in the second and third.

Christian Lawson’s career-high 23 points led the Cardinals. He also had six rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Caleb Mattes posted 11 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Nate Lampe added eight points, three rebounds and three assists and Hunter Teague scored seven points.

Caden Klein dished out two assists and swiped two steals and Cade Bauer and Christian Ergenbright each grabbed two boards.

The Cardinals (7-10) shot 45.7 percent from the floor, made 5-of-11 from 3-point range and connected on 17-of-29 from the free-throw line.

Webster City (5-12) got 12 points and eight rebounds from Briar Klaver, but the Lynx were 4-of-15 from 3 and 9-of-15 from the foul line.

Jace Larson added eight points and six rebounds and Jack Larson tallied seven points and five boards.

Norwalk 52, Newton 45

NORWALK — A slow start and a tough shooting night plagued the Cardinals against rival Norwalk on Tuesday.

The Cardinals fell behind early and were down by double digits after the third quarter during a 52-45 loss to the Warriors in Little Hawkeye Conference play.

Newton outscored Norwalk 20-14 in the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback. The Cardinals were plagued by 31 percent shooting from the floor and no one reached double figures.

Mattes, Lampe and Lawson all scored nine points for Newton, which dropped to 3-8 in conference play. Lawson grabbed nine boards and dished out two assists, Mattes added four rebounds and five assists and Lampe corralled five rebounds.

Cade Bauer

Landon Bozarth put in a career-best six points and swiped two steals and Bauer had four points and three rebounds.

Newton was 8-of-27 from 3 and 5-of-9 from the foul line. Norwalk improved to 14-3 and 10-1 in the conference.
