Owen Guldberg

The Newton boys’ bowling team recently suffered a narrow loss to Ballard. The Cardinals were downed by a total of 13 pins last week.

On Saturday, Newton was on the other end of a narrow matchup and the boys edged rival Oskaloosa by 44 pins.

The victory was part of a Cardinal sweep on Senior Day as the girls’ bowling team dominated the Indians by 357 pins.

The Newton boys’ senior-dominated varsity lineup defeated Oskaloosa 2,872 to 2,828 at Cardinal Lanes.

Genessa Slings

The girls grabbed a big lead in the individual round and never looked back during a 2,435 to 2,078 home triumph.

In the boys’ matchup, Newton (5-2) led by 10 pins after the opening round before rolling three Baker games of more than 202 to pull even further ahead. The Indians (7-3) had a Baker game of 228, but it wasn’t enough to complete a small comeback.

The Oskaloosa girls edged Newton by 14 in the Baker games, but the Cardinals (6-1) led 1,666 to 1,295 after the opening round.

The Indians’ roster features defending Class 2A state champion Trey VanWyk, but Owen Guldberg celebrated his Senior Day with a win over the state’s current leader in total pins and average.

VanWyk holds a single-game average of 242 but rolled a 214 and a 193 on Saturday. That was not good enough to take the overall spot as Guldberg had single games of 200 and 211 for a winning series of 411.

VanWyk was second with his 407 and Oskaloosa’s Marshall Seibert finished third with a 401 series.

Austin Kennedy, the only non-senior in the Cardinals’ current varsity lineup, was fourth overall with a 380 series. He had a pair of 190s.

David Holmes

Sebastian King and Tamion Adams were next in fifth and sixth, respectively. King rolled single games of 188 and 185 for a 373 series and Adams had single games of 203 and 162 for a 365.

David Holmes and Andrew Wiles finished ninth and 10th in the standings, respectively.

Holmes rolled single games of 158 and 197 for a 355 series. Wiles, who currently leads Newton in single-game average, posted games of 174 and 179 for a 353 series.

The Newton junior varsity featured a 379 series from Landon Gooden, a 359 from Alex Kearse and a 353 from Jaret Sweeney. Sweeney had a single game of 203.

The Newton girls dominated thanks in part to a career-best game of 226 and a career-best series of 413 from Genessa Slings. Libbie Keith also celebrated Senior Day with a season-best 201 and Maria Baxin posted a career-best game of 162.

Slings was the overall winner with her 413 series. Her other single-game score was 187.

Gabbie Humphrey, the team’s current leader in average and total pins, was the runner-up with a 388 series and Keith turned in a 353 series in fourth.

Humphrey rolled single games of 186 and 202 and Keith salvaged a slow start to her opening game with a 152 and then turned in the 201.

Baxin placed sixth overall with a 305 series. Her other single game was 143.

Maria Baxin

Marissa Burns and Aeris Archer were 10th and 11th, respectively. Burns finished with a 116 and posted a series of 207 and Archer ended her individual round with a 118 and finished with a 195 series.

Oskaloosa’s Sidney Thompson, who ranks second in 2A in total pins and average, finished third in the final standings with a 382 series.

Ava Ridenour used a season-best 214 to post a 341 series in fifth. The Indians dropped to 6-4 this season.

The Newton girls junior varsity was once again led by Alex Schultz, who posted a 247 series after single games of 163 and 84.
