Newton boys roll past Pella, fall to Ballard

King leads Cardinals in weekend split

The depth of the Newton boys’ bowling team was on full display during its home meet against Pella on Saturday.

The Cardinal varsity squad defeated the Dutch by more than 100 pins, but the top junior varsity squad was only 10 pins back of Pella, too.

Sebastian King led the varsity bowlers and took first overall with a 440 and Nathan Hauber got bumped up to the varsity for the Baker games after his 414 during the individual round as the Cardinals defeated Pella 2,816 to 2,701 at Cardinal Lanes.

Newton (4-2) held a narrow 32-pin lead after the individual round but dominated the Bakers with a pair of 210-plus games and a 194.

King’s 440 series included single games of 223 and 217, and Tamion Adams finished third with a 391 series. He had individual scores of 178 and 213.

Andrew Wiles, who has the team’s best overall average, came in fifth with a 367 after single games of 183 and 184.

Owen Guldberg and Austin Kennedy tied for eighth and David Holmes was 10th. Guldberg (158-169) and Kennedy (162-165) each rolled a 327 series, while Holmes (131-149) posted a 280 series.

Carter Failor of Pella (1-4) was second overall with a 416 series. He had a single game of 235. Zander Beckey was fourth with a 378 and Alex Bishara finished sixth with a 365.

Newton’s junior varsity rolled a 2,691. Hauber’s 414 series included single games of 231 and 188.

Jaret Sweeney, who also was brought up to the varsity for the Baker games, turned in a 390 series with single games of 202 and 188. Alex Kearse (178-192) and Landon Gooden (182-184) posted a 370 and 366 series, respectively.

Garrett Crandall led Newton’s JV2 team with a 341 series. He had single games of 172 and 169.

Ballard 2731, Newton 2718

AMES — King posted another 400-plus series and Guldberg finished in the top five, but it wasn’t enough as the Cardinals were edged by Ballard at Perfect Games on Friday.

The Cardinals led the Bombers by 72 pins going into the Baker games, but the hosts rallied with a pair of 200-plus games to end the day.

Newton’s final two Baker games were 223 and 163 and that was the difference in the Cardinals’ 2,731 to 2,718 loss.

King was the overall winner with a 439 series. He rolled single games of 231 and 208.

Andrew Wiles

Guldberg finished with a 359 series, while Adams and Kennedy tied for seventh with 342s. Guldberg had single games of 191 and 168, Adams rolled a 169 and a 173 and Kennedy posted single games of 152 and 190.

Wiles was ninth overall with a 341 series after single scores of 149 and 192 and Holmes took 10th with a 304 series and single games of 116 and 188.

Ballard (4-4) was led by Brenden Wright, who was second overall with a 378 series. He had single games of 192 and 186.

Dawson Brekke (174-197) took third with a 371 and Jaron Watson (162-194) was fifth with a 356.

The Newton JV was led by Ethan Valtman, who turned in a 302 series with single games of 138 and 164.
