Cardinal boys finish second, L-S seventh at Belle Plaine

Mace-Maynard, Elliott win titles at Kurt Hinschberger Invitational

BELLE PLAINE — Jake Mace-Maynard won his first tournament championship, 11 of the 12 wrestlers in the field placed fifth or better and the Newton boys’ wrestling team finished second at the Kurt Hinschberger Invitational on Saturday.

The Cardinals’ 12 wrestlers scored 163 points, which tied Class 1A Pleasantville for the runner-up spot. Class 1A Logan-Magnolia won the tournament with 200 points.

Newton was the only 3A program in the field. Class 2A Aplington-Parkersburg/Grundy Center (152) and host Belle Plaine (106) rounded out the top five and the rest of the nine-team field featured Highland (105.5), Lynnville-Sully (50), WACO (39.5) and Lone Tree (5).

Kimball Elliott

Mace-Maynard won the title at 175 pounds, while Kent Montgomery (106), Lane Rozendaal (150), Coleby Revell (215) and Thomas Stadelmann (285) all were second at their weights.

Lynnville-Sully was led by Kimball Elliott, who won the tournament championship at 126.

Mace-Maynard went 2-0 at 175 with one pin and one win by major decision. Revell (12-5), Kaiden Rogers and Aiden Robson all finished 3-1 for the day.

Revell had three pins and his lone loss was a 7-4 decision against AP/GC’s Jesse Brouwer.

Rogers finished third at 120 after winning twice by fall and once by major decision. Robson placed third at 138. He had two pins and one major decision.

Lane Rozendaal

Montgomery (14-6) and Stadelmann (13-7) both were 2-1 with two pins and Rozendaal (14-8) was 2-1 with one pin and one major decision.

Stadelmann’s lone loss came by pin against 2A No. 6 Trent Cakerice of AP/GC. Montgomery fell 11-6 to 1A No. 8 Crosby Yoder of Logan-Magnolia.

Abel Aldama, Zander Robson, Seth Adams and Asher Rhoads all finished 2-2.

Zander Robson (126) and Adams (132) were fourth at their weights and each wrestler won once by fall.

Rhoads took fifth at 144 after winning twice by fall and Aldama was fifth at 113. Chevy Langston (165) scored sixth-place points despite finishing 0-3.

Lynnville-Sully entered six wrestlers. That did not include Ben Squires, who is the starter at heavyweight.

Kaiden Rogers

Elliott (22-5) won his bracket at 126 after a 3-0 day that included two pins. He won 11-9 over AP/GC’s Carter Liston in the finals.

Wyatt Mathis was the next best finisher as he took fourth at 175. Hunter Van Wyk (120) and Burt Johnson (132) were sixth at their weights and Trevor Van Wyk placed seventh at 138.

Mathis and Trevor Van Wyk both finished 1-2 with one pin, Johnson was 1-3 with one pin and Hunter Van Wyk ended up 1-3, too. Tyler Routier was 0-3 at 126 but scored eighth-place points.
