Oskaloosa’s Foster too much for Newton girls

Cardinals start slow in road loss to rival Indians

OSKALOOSA — The Newton girls’ basketball team played even with Oskaloosa in three of the four quarters during their Little Hawkeye Conference matchup on Friday.

Unfortunately, the Indians led by 11 after the first period and won by that same margin, 49-38, at home.

Oskaloosa went into halftime in front by 14 and the Cardinals outscored their hosts 18-15 in the second half.

Newton couldn’t slow down Oskaloosa post Dasia Foster, who scored 28 of the team’s 49 points. She had 20 of those 28 at halftime.

The Cardinals did get a career-best 11 points from Alex Garvis and Tori White grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds in the loss.

Garvis chipped in five rebounds, two assists and three steals. Eight of her 11 points came in the first half.

Hailey Dickerson tallied seven points and nine rebounds, White registered six points, three assists and four steals and Payton Carkhuff chipped in five points and two assists.

Bella Winther scored six points, Evie Main put in three points and Alex Riney grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists.

The Cardinals (1-7, 0-5 in the LHC) shot 30 percent from the floor, made 5-of-20 from 3-point range and connected on 3-of-13 from the free-throw line.

Newton turned the ball over 17 times and grabbed 34 rebounds.

Oskaloosa improved to 7-3 and 2-3 in the conference.
