Newton boys find success at Ottumwa Invitational

Cardinals win 29 matches in tournament, place 11th as a team

OTTUMWA — The Newton boys’ wrestling team finished 29-16 in its matches at the Ottumwa Invitational on Saturday.

But the Cardinals’ best finish was fourth and Newton took 11th in the 21-team field.

Kent Montgomery had the best individual finish, and seven other Cardinals won at least three matches. Unfortunately, four of the nine grapplers lost their first bouts to move to the backside of their brackets.

Montgomery (12-5) was fourth at 106 pounds. He won his first three matches by pin before falling in the semifinals and the third-place bout.

Lane Rozendaal

Lane Rozendaal (12-7) finished fifth at 150 and was 4-1 with three pins. His lone loss was a 6-3 decision in TB-1 in the quarterfinals to Evan Rolfs of North Scott.

The next best finish came from Jake Mace-Maynard, who was sixth at 175. He was 3-3 with two pins but lost his first match of the day.

Kaiden Rogers (120), Asher Rhoads (144), Nick Milburn (215) and Thomas Stadelmann (285) all placed ninth at their weights.

Rogers was 3-1 with one pin, one technical fall and one major decision but his lone loss was his first match of the day.

Rhoads dropped his first match but went 4-1 with three pins. Milburn started 0-2 but won four straight matches and claimed three wins by fall.

Thomas Stadelmann (12-6) fell in his opener 10-8 in SV-1 to Ashton Honore of Iowa City West. But he recovered to go 3-1 with two pins.

Jake Mace-Maynard

Aiden Robson placed 10th at 138 after going 3-2 with three pins and Seth Adams was 14th at 132 following a 2-3 day.

Creston won the tournament championship with 496 points, while North Scott was second with 450.5. Host Ottumwa (433.5), Iowa City West (393.5) and Iowa City Liberty (330.5) completed the top five. Newton’s nine wrestlers scored 227.5 points in 11th.
