Three football players and six volleyball players from the most recent season earned academic all-state recognition recently.
Four Newton seniors were recognized, while three seniors from PCM’s volleyball team, another from the Colfax-Mingo volleyball team and Baxter senior Treyton Travis also earned honors from both the Iowa Football Coaches Association and the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

The four Cardinals represented were Cody Klein and Caleb Mattes from the football team and Hailey Sumpter and Haylie Ryan from the volleyball squad.
To earn academic all-state football honors, athletes must be a senior starter, be involved in extra-curricular activities, be recommended by their head coach and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.7 or better after their junior year. Klein and Mattes were chosen from Class 4A, while Travis was a selection out of 8-man.

Sumpter and Ryan were academic all-staters in 4A, PCM’s Lark Drake, Reese Palm and Ella Schendel all were selected from 3A and Colfax-Mingo’s Charlotte Donahue was a 2A choice.
