Tucker Wheeler leads PCM wrestlers at DCG

Mustangs finish sixth at Andy Davidson Invitational

Tucker Wheeler

GRIMES — For now, Tucker Wheeler is the only PCM wrestler who appears in the state rankings.

He’s proving early in the season the ranking is warranted as he improved to 7-0 on Saturday during a 4-0 day that included the 144-pound bracket title at the Andy Davidson DCG Mustang Invitational.

Wheeler led his Mustangs to a sixth-place finish in the 13-team field that included Class 3A Johnston, DCG, Urbandale and Des Moines East.

PCM scored 138 points without three weight classes. The Mustangs trailed Urbandale by 10 for fifth. Johnston entered 21 wrestlers and posted 222.5 points at the top of the standings.

All four of Wheeler’s wins Saturday came by fall. Wheeler, who is ranked ninth in 2A at 150, is now 7-0 on the season with seven pins.

Eight PCM grapplers scored top-four finishes in their weight classes. Kaliber Fry (120) and Wyatt Wheeler (175) both placed third, while Remington Fry (138), Hewitt Brinegar (150), Sawyer Bouwkamp (157), Nate Richards (190) and Kaden Clark (285) all finished fourth.

Wheeler was 3-1 for the day with two pins, while Kaliber Fry was 2-1 and his only loss was an 8-3 decision to Nevada’s Kaden Weber, who is ranked No. 1 in 2A at 113.

Remington Fry, Brinegar and Richards each went 2-2 with Brinegar and Richards each posting two pins.

One of Brinegar’s losses came against Carroll’s Cooper Ludwig, who is ranked No. 5 at 144. Remington Fry suffered one of his losses to West Marshall’s Shane Hanford, who is ranked No. 5 in 2A at 132.

Charlie Sitzmann (132), Harrison Brinegar (165), Bouwkamp and Clark all finished 1-2 for the day. Bouwkamp suffered one of his losses to Carroll’s Owen Klocke, who is ranked 11th in 2A at 150.

The rest of the top five in the team standings featured Creston/Orient-Macksburg (179.5), Carroll (158), DCG (156) and Urbandale (148),

PCM (138), ninth-ranked Webster City (125), Council Bluffs Lewis Central (109.5), West Marshall (90), ADM (82), Des Moines East (65), Oskaloosa (50) and Nevada (46) finalized the 13-team field.
