PCM boys dominate glass in win over Greene County

Wendt’s double-double not enough against Saydel

MONROE — A 20-point night from Gavin Van Gorp and a dominating performance on the glass led the PCM boys’ basketball team to a win over Greene County on Friday.

The Mustangs also had significant advantages in both the second and fourth quarters during a 61-45 home triumph in Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference play.

PCM claimed its first conference win of the season in part because it made eight shots from downtown and out-rebounded the Rams 39-25.

The Mustangs and Rams were tied at 11-all after one quarter and both teams scored 12 in the third. But PCM’s 20-9 surplus in the second and 18-13 advantage in the fourth was enough to seal the win.

Van Gorp finished with 20 points, two rebounds and two assists to lead the offense. He was 4-of-8 from 3-point range.

Jacob Wendt tallied 14 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals, Chase Wagaman added seven points, six rebounds and two assists and Jack Jungling chipped in four points, nine rebounds and two steals.

Kaleb DeVries registered five points, three rebounds and two assists, Alex Wendt posted three points and five rebounds and Jake Winters contributed two rebounds and two assists.

The Mustangs (1-1, 1-1 in the HOIAC) also got three points from Cutler VandeLune, three assists from Gavin Steenhoek, three rebounds from Mark Bussan and two rebounds from Gavin DeRaad.

The Mustangs shot 37.7 percent from the floor, made 8-of-27 from 3 and connected on 13-of-19 from the free-throw line. They committed 18 turnovers.

Greene County (0-3, 0-1) had a tough shooting night, making only 3-of-24 from 3 and hitting on 34 percent from the floor in all. The Rams were 6-of-9 from the charity stripe and committed 15 turnovers.

Gabe Ebersole led the Rams with 14 points and four rebounds.

Saydel 57, PCM 45

DES MOINES — Jacob Wendt posted a double-double, but PCM fell to Saydel at Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday.

The Mustangs trailed by eight after one and fell behind by 19 at halftime before losing 57-45 during HOIAC action.

PCM grabbed 20 offensive rebounds and turned the ball over only 14 times but struggled from the floor. The Mustangs made 30 percent of their shots and connected on 5-of-26 from 3 in the loss.

Jacob Wendt led the Mustangs with 10 points, 13 rebounds and two assists, while Jungling added a career-best 11 points and seven boards.

Van Gorp finished with seven points and two rebounds, VandeLune added six points and four boards and Wagaman chipped in three points, four rebounds and three assists.

Steenhoek posted three points and two boards, Easton Webb grabbed four rebounds and Pete Kiernen scored three points.

The Mustangs rallied some in the second half, outscoring the Eagles (2-1, 1-1) 11-5 in the third.
