ELDON — Addison Steenhoek set a new school record, three Mustangs recorded at least nine kills and the PCM volleyball team served up 14 aces during a 23-25, 25-21, 25-9, 25-13 non-conference road win over Cardinal on Thursday.

The win moves the Mustangs to an even 11-11. They won 10 matches all of last season.

“At the beginning of the match, we were making a lot of our own mistakes,” PCM head volleyball coach Sarah De Vries said. “Once we got warmed up and cleaned things up, we were able to pull away from Cardinal easily.”

Rebecca De Vries

PCM made 13 hitting errors and eight service miscues in the first two sets but had only four hitting errors and three service errors in the final two games.

“I told the girls we needed to take care of the ball and let them make the mistakes,” De Vries said.

Rebecca De Vries led the offensive attack with 15 kills and she chipped in five blocks, five digs and two aces. Elle Davis chipped in nine kills and three blocks.

Steenhoek set a new school record in digs for a match with 32 and served up six aces. The previous record was 25, which was set by Erin Birkenholtz.

“Our middles (Rebecca) De Vries and (Elle) Davis had a lot of action at the net and put up eight blocks between the two of them,” Coach De Vries said. “So proud of (Addison) Steenhoek in the back row. She was all over the place.”
