Class 4A No. 2 Carlisle eliminates Newton softball

Cardinals limited to three hits in regional semifinal loss

CARLISLE — Hailey Sumpter held Class 4A No. 2 Carlisle to under its season scoring average, but the Newton softball team managed only three hits against the Wildcats during a 4A Region 4 semifinal game on Saturday.

Newton fell behind 2-0 after three innings and Carlisle added three runs the rest of the way during a 5-0 regional home win.

The Wildcats out-hit Newton 10-3 and the Cardinals (15-18) committed zero errors. Carlisle averaged 6.5 runs per game before Saturday’s win.

“I’m proud of the fight of these girls this season, especially the last two games,” Newton head softball coach Kory Leiker said. “It’s been a great season and with all of them returning next season we will be even stronger.”

Sumpter, Peyton Durr and Sloan Brodersen had the Cardinals’ lone hits and Brodersen doubled. Sumpter finishes tied for the team lead with a batting average of .330.

Sumpter (13-13) took the pitching loss after allowing five earned runs on 10 hits, two walks and two hit batters in six innings. She struck out one. Sumpter took a comebacker just below the collarbone in the fifth inning but stayed in the game.

The Wildcats, who committed one error, were led by Amber Dougherty’s two hits and three RBIs. Lauren McGriff tallied three hits and Reagan Roling chipped in two hits and two runs.

Addesyn Abel (18-5) spun seven innings and allowed no runs and three hits with six strikeouts.

The Wildcats (29-6) face Ballard (11-13) in the regional championship match at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Carlisle.

The Bombers edged Bondurant-Farrar, 3-1, their regional semifinal game.
