Owens’ slam pushes PCM baseball past Sigourney

Mustangs edge Perry in conference play

PRAIRIE CITY — Will Owens’ first career home run was a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning and the blast sent the PCM baseball team to an 8-7 non-conference win over Sigourney on Friday night.

The Mustangs led 4-2 after six innings but needed Owens’ homer to rally after Sigourney took the lead with five runs in the top of the seventh.

Jack Jungling also belted his first career homer and Gavin Fenton, Easton Webb, Nick Farver and Jacob Wendt all had two hits apiece for the Mustangs.

PCM out-hit the Savages 13-4 and won the game despite committing four errors.

Jungling’s solo homer in the bottom of the second tied the game at 2-all. PCM added two runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 4-2.

Four of Sigourney’s five runs in the seventh were unearned.

The homers by Jungling and Owens were their only hits of the game. Jungling scored two runs and walked once and Owens had four RBIs.

Fenton tripled, scored one run and had one RBI, Webb doubled twice, Farver stole one base and had one RBI and Wendt scored two runs and walked once.

Webb leads the Mustangs with a .387 batting average and he has a team-best 29 hits and nine doubles this summer.

Kaleb DeVries doubled, walked once and had one RBI, Gabe Hobbs and Trigg Steenhoek each had one hit and Steenhoek added one run and one hit by pitch. Coby DeRaad scored one run and stole one base.

Farver used all of his 110 pitches and allowed two earned runs on two hits, two walks and two hit batters in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out 12 but took the no-decision and lowered his earned run average to 2.68.

Webb (3-1) earned the win on the mound. He surrendered five runs — one earned — on two hits and two walks in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out two.

Cole McKay had two RBIs to lead Sigourney (14-6), while Ty Shafranek and Ike Molyneux scored two runs.

Shafranek took the pitching loss, allowing three earned runs in the seventh.

PCM 13, Perry 12

PRAIRIE CITY — The Mustangs downed Perry in walk-off fashion on Monday during a Heart of Iowa Athletic Conference home game.

PCM used a seven-run fifth to grab a four-run advantage but needed an RBI bloop single by Jungling in the bottom of the eighth inning to down the Bluejays 13-12.

Perry out-hit PCM 15-14 and took advantage of three Mustang errors but still lost. Perry committed two errors of its own.

Farver and Webb each had three hits, while DeVries, Jungling and Zeb Padget cranked out two hits apiece.

Webb belted his second homer of the season, laced a pair of doubles, scored two runs and had four RBIs, while Farver tripled, scored two runs, walked once, had one RBI and stole one base and DeVries doubled, scored two runs and tallied one RBI. Webb leads the team with 23 RBIs.

Jungling doubled, scored one run, walked twice and registered three RBIs and Padget walked twice and scored one run.

Steenhoek doubled, scored two runs and walked twice and Owens tripled, scored one run and had three RBIs. Wendt walked once, was hit by one pitch, scored one run, stole one base and had one RBI, Fenton walked once and Carson Hansen scored one run.

Shay Burns started on the mound and allowed six runs — four earned — on four hits, one walk and one hit batter in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out one and did not factor into the decision.

Padget tossed the next five innings and surrendered six earned runs on eight hits, three walks and one hit batter. He struck out nine in 108 pitches.

Farver (2-1) earned the pitching win after allowing one hit and three walks. He struck out two in 1 2/3 innings.

Fausto Beato led Perry (6-14 overall, 4-8 in the HOIAC) with three hits, two runs and two RBIs and Drake Levan collected two hits and two runs and was hit by two pitches.

The win by the Mustangs (12-11, 9-3) completed the season sweep over Perry. PCM downed the Bluejays 14-0 on the road back on May 31.

Pella Christian 8, PCM 7

PRAIRIE CITY — The Mustangs scored another run in the seventh inning against Pella Christian, but it was not enough during an 8-7 non-conference loss to the Eagles on Tuesday.

PCM took a 3-2 lead with a three-run third and pulled within 7-6 with another three runs in the fifth but fell short despite out-hitting the Eagles 10-6. The Mustangs committed three errors.

Webb, Hobbs and DeVries all had two hits apiece to lead the offense, while Fenton, Steenhoek, Wendt and Owens each tallied one hit.

Hobbs tripled, scored one run, had three RBIs, walked once and stole one base, Webb scored two runs and walked once and DeVries walked once and swiped one bag.

Wendt’s hit was his second homer of the season, Steenhoek doubled and scored one run and Fenton walked once. Jungling drew one walk and DeRaad and Allias Nolin both scored one run.

Wendt (0-2) took the loss on the mound after allowing three runs — two earned — on four hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings. He struck out seven.

DeVries pitched the final 3 1/3 innings and surrendered five earned runs on three hits, seven walks and one hit batter. He struck out three.

Lincoln Vander Molen had two hits and two walks and Conner Van Zee collected two hits and three RBIs to lead the Eagles.

Luke Fynaardt and Brecken Ritzert split the seven innings on the mound for Pella Christian (14-12) and allowed four earned runs and nine hits but also struck out 16.

The win snapped the Eagles’ eight-game losing streak.

West Marshall 11, PCM 1

STATE CENTER — Farver had the only hit and Padget was hit by a pitch, but the Mustangs were limited to one run during an 11-1, six-inning loss to Class 2A No. 8 West Marshall during HOIAC play on Wednesday.

The Trojans out-hit PCM 15-1. Owen Siegert and Clay Cuva combined for six hits and five runs to lead West Marshall.

Siegert (5-1) allowed no earned runs and one hit and struck out 16 in six innings on the mound. His ERA is now .96.

Farver and Padget each stole one base and Farver scored the Mustangs’ run.

Trenner Van Dyke (3-3) tossed five innings and allowed 11 earned runs on 14 hits and one walk. He took the loss and struck out six.

The Trojans (21-6, 12-1) swept PCM this season. They downed the Mustangs 13-4 in Prairie City back on June 2.
