Class 4A No. 3 Mustangs gallop past Newton softball

Cards get out-hit 12-4 and commit four errors in loss to DCG

The Newton softball team played even for four innings with Class 4A No. 3 Dallas Center-Grimes on Monday.

The Cardinals couldn’t keep the Mustangs down any longer though as DCG scored a 5-1 win over Newton during Little Hawkeye Conference play.

Newton finished with four hits and four errors, and the Mustangs jumped in front for good with a three-run fifth and then plated two more in the sixth.

The Cardinals (8-7 overall, 4-5 in the conference) scored their lone run in the bottom of the sixth.

Peyton Durr had two of Newton’s four hits. She doubled and had one RBI and Mack Sims tallied one hit and one run.

Durr leads the Cardinals with a .367 batting average and a team-best six doubles and 14 RBIs. Sims scored for a team-high 18th time this season.

Hailey Sumpter (6-6) started in the circle and took the loss after allowing five runs — three earned — on 12 hits in seven innings. She struck out one and hit one batter. Sumpter also had one hit at the plate.

Dallas Center-Grimes (15-4, 7-2) was led by Olivia Huston, who finished with three hits and three RBIs. Lydia Zaruba tallied two hits and two runs.

Aubrey Johansen (9-1) was the winning pitcher. She surrendered one earned run on four hits and struck out eight in seven innings.
