Newton baseball downs Norwalk in extra innings

Cardinals use four-run ninth inning to claim first conference win

NORWALK — The Newton baseball team had twice as many hits as Norwalk and the Cardinals played a cleaner game in the field during an extra-inning win over the Warriors on Friday.

Newton led 2-0 after four innings but needed four runs in the ninth to down Norwalk 6-2 during a Little Hawkeye Conference contest.

The Cardinals out-hit the Warriors 10-5 and took advantage of seven Norwalk errors.

Finn Martin had three hits to lead the offense, seven Cardinals registered at least one hit and Newton batters were hit by five pitches.

Martin added one RBI and Riley Mouchka tallied two hits, one run and one RBI and he was hit by a pitch.

Kacey Sommars, Drew Thompson, Eli Stewart, Tade Vanderlaan and Skyler Milheiser all collected one hit.

Sommars added two runs and three walks and he was hit by a pitch, Vanderlaan doubled, scored one run and had two RBIs and he was hit by a pitch and Thompson scored two runs.

Stewart was hit by a pitch and had one RBI, Milheiser walked once and tallied one RBI and Brody Bauer was hit by a pitch.

Sommars tossed a career-high seven innings on the mound but took the no-decision. He allowed two runs — one earned — on five hits and struck out seven and walked three.

Bauer (1-0) pitched two innings in a game for the first time in his career and earned his first varsity win. He surrendered no runs and no hits and struck out three and walked one.

Newton (5-4 overall, 1-2 in the LHC) committed four errors and Norwalk dropped to 3-7 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
