Colfax-Mingo baseball scores back-to-back wins

Bracewell strikes out 13 in win over BGM

COLFAX — Cael Bracewell registered a career-best 13 strikeouts and the Colfax-Mingo baseball team used a four-run fourth inning to edge BGM during South Iowa Cedar League play on Friday.

The Tigerhawks trailed 3-0 before scoring the four runs. The two teams combined for 13 hits and 11 errors.

Bracewell’s 13 strikeouts came in six innings. He allowed two earned runs on five hits and walked five.

Nathan Sloan tossed the final inning for the save. He locked down the win after striking out one and allowing no hits and two walks.

At the plate, Ayden Sloan led Colfax-Mingo (2-4 overall, 2-1 in the conference) with two hits and one run. Bracewell walked three times and Nathan Sloan, Colton Edwards, Donavan Baucom, Konner Dalton and Andrew Hunter all had one hit.

Baucom doubled and walked twice, Hunter added one run, Nathan Sloan stole one base and Dalton scored one run and had one RBI. Michael Camp walked and had one RBI and Isaiah Baucom scored one run.

Jacob Maurer led the Bears (2-2, 1-2) with two hits, two RBIs and one walk. BGM walked eight times and stole nine bases.

Colfax-Mingo 2, Montezuma 1

MONTEZUMA — The Tigerhawks had just one hit against Montezuma but still found a way to down the Braves in extra innings during SICL play on Wednesday.

Colfax-Mingo trailed 1-0 through five innings, tied the game in the sixth and then won 2-1 following a run in the top of the eighth.

Bracewell tossed the final two innings, stayed at 25 pitches and struck out five of the six batters he faced for the win. He allowed no hits and no runs and walked none.

Montezuma (1-1, 1-1) out-hit Colfax-Mingo 4-1, but the Braves committed two errors.

The Tigerhawks’ lone hit was a double by Dalton. Nathan Sloan, Bracewell and Hunter all walked once, Nathan Sloan scored both runs and stole one base and Bracewell was hit by a pitch and stole one base.

Edwards pitched the first six innings and surrendered one earned run on four hits and struck out nine, walked three and hit one batter on 110 pitches.

Owen Cook threw 112 pitches and took the loss for Montezuma despite allowing no earned runs and striking out 17. He walked two and gave up one hit.

Lynnville-Sully 17, Colfax-Mingo 2

COLFAX — A slow start doomed the Tigerhawks against Class 1A No. 6 Lynnville-Sully on May 22.

The Hawks scored 10 runs in the first inning and Colfax-Mingo committed seven errors in the SICL loss.

Colfax-Mingo was led by Dalton, who finished with one hit, one run and one walk.

Edwards had one hit and scored one run, Ayden Sloan walked once and was hit by a pitch and Hunter walked once. Bracewell’s hit was a double.

Dalton tossed three innings and allowed seven earned runs on five hits with two strikeouts, three walks and one hit batter.

Hunter allowed seven earned runs on two hits and walked two and hit one batter.

Donavan Baucom allowed one hit and hit one batter in his one inning of work.

Lynnville-Sully got a pair of homers and five RBIs from Reese Dunsbergen and Blake Van Wyk tallied two hits, two runs and one RBI.
