One big inning helps Newton baseball down Chariton

Class 4A No. 2 Ankeny Centennial too much for Cardinals

An eight-run fifth inning propelled the Newton baseball team to a non-conference win over Chariton on Thursday.

The Cardinals trailed 3-2 after four innings and went down 4-2 in the top of the fifth before plating eight runs in the bottom half during a 10-7 victory at Eversman Field.

Chariton added three runs in the sixth, but Kacey Sommars shut the door in the seventh for another save.

Tade Vanderlaan pitched into the sixth inning and got the win on the mound. Sommars recorded the final four outs for his second save of the season.

Turner Williams had four hits, one double and three runs to lead Newton’s offense. Riley Mouchka added two hits, one double, one run, three RBIs and one steal.

Brody Bauer and Eli Stewart each tallied one hit, one run and two RBIs, Sommars registered one hit, one run and one walk, Drew Thompson chipped in one hit, one run and one steal and he was hit by two pitches and Finn Martin collected one hit, one run and one RBI.

Stewart’s hit was a triple and Skyler Milheiser walked once and scored one run.

Both teams finished with 11 hits, but the Chargers were plagued by two errors.

Vanderlaan improved to 2-0 after allowing six earned runs on 10 hits in 5 2/3 innings. He also struck out two, walked two, hit one batter and threw 104 pitches.

Sommars got the save and stayed under 40 pitches in the process. He surrendered one earned run on one hit while striking out two and walking two in 1 1/3 innings.

Chariton (3-3) was led by Aidan Mundt and Logan Shore, who each had two hits. Kasyn Paige collected three RBIs and Caleb Watts drove in two.

Shore took the loss on the mound after allowing six earned runs on eight hits in four innings.

Ankeny Centennial 11, Newton 1, 5 innings

ANKENY — Thompson and Vanderlaan each recorded two hits, Vanderlaan had the team’s only RBI and Thompson walked once, but the Cardinals couldn’t keep up with Class 4A No. 2 Ankeny Centennial during an 11-1, five-inning road loss.

The Jaguars (6-0) scored one run each in the first two innings and then plated two in the third and seven in the fourth to end the game early.

Williams, Bauer and Stewart all had one hit each to lead Newton (4-2). Williams also walked once and Bauer and Stewart each were hit by a pitch. Martin drew one walk and Jake Ingle scored one run.

Williams (1-1) started the game and took the loss on the mound. He allowed three earned runs on five hits in three innings. He struck out three, walked three and hit one batter while staying under 60 pitches.

Mouchka pitched in relief. He allowed seven earned runs on five hits and two walks in one inning and 40 pitches.

Lucas Bruhl had three hits, two runs, two RBIs and two steals to lead the Jaguar offense. Nick Severs posted three hits and two RBIs and Easton Miller tallied two hits and two RBIs.
