PCM boys finish fifth, Newton seventh Pella coed

Short-handed Cardinals score 57 in final regular-season meet

PELLA — Neither Newton nor PCM used their full lineups at the Pella Dutch Coed Invitational on Monday.

The Mustangs registered two wins and three Cardinals posted career-best times in individual races during a coed track and field meet.

PCM’s scored 76 points in fifth and Newton finished seventh in the nine-team field with 57 points.

Host Pella won the meet with 158 points, while Norwalk (128), Grinnell (89) and Pella Christian (87) completed the top five. Knoxville (71) finished sixth, Oskaloosa (48) was eighth and the Pella JV (15) finished ninth.

Gavin Van Gorp opened the Mustangs’ night with a win in the long jump. His best mark was 20 feet, 2 inches. Jacob Wendt placed fifth with a leap of 17-11.

The other victory came in the 4x200-meter relay. The team of Gavin Fenton, Gabe Hobbs, Griffin Olson and Evan Jones won the race in a season-best time of 1 minute, 32.67 seconds, which ranks 10th in Class 2A.

The Mustangs’ two runner-up finishes came in the sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays.

Fenton, Olson, Jones and Adrien Robbins finished the sprint medley relay in a season-best 1:38.71.

Fenton, Olson, Robbins and Van Gorp posted the fourth-best shuttle hurdle relay time in 2A after finishing in 1:01.56.

August Stock took third in the 400 hurdles with a career-best 1:01.75.

Newton’s top finishes came from Brody Bauer and Christian Ergenbright.

Bauer was third in the 110 high hurdles with a career-best time of 16.36 seconds. Ergenbright also was third in the 100 in a career-best 11.8 and Nick Thomason placed fourth in 11.91.

The Cardinals were fourth in the 4x400 and shuttle hurdle relays.

In the 4x400, Cole Walter, Koltt Ahn, Wyatt Weter and Gabe Otto finished in 3:56.53.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Curtis Payne, Caden Klein, Reilly Trease and Bauer posted their second-best time of the season in 1:03.29.

Klein (career-best 23.52) also was fifth in the 200 and Walter (57.39) placed fifth in the 400.

Landon Menninga (4:51.01) took sixth in the 1,600 and Thomas Stadelmann (132-2) finished sixth in the discus.

PCM’s 4x800 relay team of Carson Hansen, Coby DeRaad, Joe Shaver and Riley Graber finished fourth in 9:06.38.

Van Gorp (16.44) placed fourth in the 110 high hurdles, Sawyer Bouwkamp (season-best 5-6) took fifth in the high jump and Graber (58.17) finished sixth in the 400.

The Mustangs also were fifth in the 4x100 and distance medley relays.

In the 4x100, Robbins, Hobbs, Wendt and Carter Burns posted a time of 45.41 seconds and the distance medley relay team of Wendt, Mickey Mackewich, Aydan Camu and Gavin DeRaad finished in 4:09.05.
