Big night nets Newton girls second at Pella Dutch Coed Invitational

Mustangs grabbed two silvers, finish seventh as a team

PELLA — For the second time in her career, Addy Terpstra went under 15 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles.

Terpstra’s season-best time of 14.74 seconds earned her the win and moved her near the top of the Class 3A rankings.

She also anchored the shuttle hurdle relay to a victory and the Cardinals registered 10 second-place finishes and took second as a team at the Pella Dutch Coed Invitational on Monday.

Newton was second in six of the seven relays and grabbed double points in four individual events.

Host Pella won the meet championship with 159 points, but Newton wasn’t too far behind in second with 140.

Oskaloosa (108), Pella Christian (80), Grinnell (75), Knoxville (57), PCM (52) and the Pella JV (19) completed the eight-team field.

The Mustangs were held out of the win column, but they were the runner-up to Newton in the shuttle hurdle relay and Ayla Barrett also was second in the high jump.

Terpstra won the 3A state title in the 100 hurdles last season with a time of 14.55 seconds. Her season-best time of 14.74 on Monday puts her second in 3A, but she’s only .01 back of the top spot.

Chloe Rorabaugh gave the Cardinals a 1-2 finish in the event as she was second with a career-best time of 16.86 seconds.

Terpstra lowered her personal-best time in the 400 hurdles and her 1 minute, 10.07 seconds placed her second and she now ranks 17th in 3A. Tori White finished fourth in 1:20.8.

Macy Lampe, JaQuay Priest and Mack Sims teamed up with Terpstra in the shuttle hurdle relay and the Cardinals won the race in 1:08.2.

Newton posted season-best times in three of the seven relays.

Lola Rivera, Priest, Lauren Clarke and Brooklyn Shannon placed second in the sprint medley relay with a season-best time of 1:54.87.

The 4x800 relay team of Harper Barton, Bella Winther, Kate Muckler and Hadley Kruse registered a season-best 10:25.81 in second.

Winther and Muckler teamed back up in the 4x400 relay and Shannon and Clarke helped Newton finish second in a season-best 4:12.20.

Rorabaugh, White, Alex Riney and Peyton Ray finished second in the distance medley relay in 4:48.21.

The 4x100 relay team of Rivera, Priest, Abby Bruce and Terpstra took second in 52.01 seconds and the 4x200 relay team of Clarke, Rivera, Bruce and Winther came in second in 1:51.44.

Kruse and Ray gave the Cardinals double points in the 1,500. Kruse came in second in 5:27.64 and Ray was fourth in 5:37.28.

White had the final silver-medal finish as she tied for second in the high jump with a mark of 5 feet, 0 inches.

Kruse (career-best 2:36) and Riney (career-best 2:45.8) were third and fourth, respectively, in the 800 and Paxton Panada (14:34.26) finished third in the 3,000.

Annie Main took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15-2, Tierney Adams grabbed sixth in the shot put with a season-best toss of 32-9 3/4 and Sims posted a career-best time of 28.81 seconds and placed second in the 200.

PCM’s Barrett tied White for second in the high jump. She matched a career-best with a leap of 5-0.

The Mustangs’ shuttle hurdle relay team of Tori Lindsay, Jorja Teeter, Lillian Humpal and Morgan Karr came in second in 1:10.13.

The 4x800 relay team of Abi Teeter, Paiten Rumbaugh, Addison Steenhoek and Tiffani Koonce finished third in a season-best time of 10:44.84.

Ryan Bennett, Stella Stravers, Elle Davis and Sophia Steenhoek teamed up to finish fourth in the sprint medley relay. They posted a time of 2:01.83.

Jillian Fairbanks also was fourth in the 3,000 with a time of 15:31.69 and Addison Shannon took sixth in the long jump with a career-best leap of 15-1.

The Mustangs were fifth in both the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

Humpal, Karr, Koonce and Jorja Teeter finished the 4x100 relay in 52.46 seconds and the 4x200 relay team of Shannon, Bennett, Stravers and Lindsay completed the race in a season-best 1:55.47.
