Newton girls tennis places seventh at LHC tourney

Cardinals edge North Polk in home triangular

PELLA — Neither singles player nor the doubles teams were seeded in the top four for Wednesday’s Little Hawkeye Conference girls’ tennis tournament.

The Cardinals were behind the eight ball from the beginning, but Lauryn Garrett won a pair of matches to lead the Newton girls’ tennis team to a seventh-place finish.

Newton scored 16 points for the day and had twice as many points as Dallas Center-Grimes.

Pella won the conference championship with 50 points. The Lady Dutch edged host Pella Christian (46) and Grinnell (42) and Norwalk (40) also were within 10 points of the top spot.

Oskaloosa (30) and Indianola (26) completed the eight-team field.

Garrett played in the Flight 1 singles bracket for Newton and placed fifth after winning twice following a first-round loss.

Garrett fell 6-4, 6-3 in her opening match but closed out her day with a pair of three-set wins. Her first win was 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 and she also claimed a 6-2, 3-6, 12-10 victory.

The next best finish for Newton came at Flight 2 doubles. Madison Rinehart and Izzy Wilson were 1-2 for the day. They lost their first and last match in straight sets and their win was 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (7-2).

Ella Swarts and Olivia Hotchkin placed seventh at Flight 1 doubles. They lost 6-2, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-4 before winning their seventh-place match 6-2, 6-1.

Roxanna Almazan played Flight 2 singles and was 0-3 for the day and placed eighth.

Cardinals edge North Polk to win home triangular

A pair of doubles teams led Newton to a victory during a home triangular against North Polk and Saydel on Tuesday.

Rinehart and Sloan Brodersen and Delaney Cobler and Kaitlyn Bloom combined to go 4-0 during doubles action against the Comets and Eagles.

Those four wins were key in Newton’s tiebreaker victory over North Polk. Both teams registered seven wins and Saydel finished third with four victories.

The Cardinals had an 80-85 advantage in games lost and that decided the tiebreaker victory. Each school had two singles players and four doubles teams.

Rinehart and Brodersen went 2-0 for the day at No. 2 doubles. They cruised to a 10-0 win and also won 10-9 (11-9).

Cobler and Bloom were 10-3 and 10-8 victors at No. 4 doubles.

Wilson was 1-1 at No. 2 singles, while Swarts and Hotchkin and Avery Potter and Paige Benson each registered one win in doubles action.

Wilson’s 1-1 day included a 10-3 win and a 10-3 loss. Almazan lost twice at No. 1 singles.

Swarts and Hotchkin played No. 1 doubles and their 1-1 day included a 10-5 win and an 11-9 (8-6) loss.

Potter and Benson were 1-1 at No. 3 doubles. They won 10-2 and lost 10-9 (7-3).
