Two relay wins guide Cardinal boys to fifth at LHC meet

Newton ties Grinnell with 49 points

PELLA — Curtis Payne and Reilly Trease both were part of the lone wins for the Newton boys’ track and field team on Tuesday.

Caden Klein also played a big factor in the team scoring and the Cardinals’ 49 points netted them a fifth-place finish at the Little Hawkeye Conference meet.

Newton tied Grinnell in fifth. Host Pella won the conference championship with 177 points. Norwalk was next with 157 and Indianola (114) and Dallas Center-Grimes (95) completed the top five. Pella Christian (45) and Oskaloosa (33) were seventh and eighth, respectively.

The two victories came in the shuttle hurdle and 4x200 relays. Klein also placed third in the 400-meter hurdles.

Payne, Trease, Klein and Brody Bauer earned the conference championship in the shuttle hurdle relay. Their winning time was clocked in 1 minute, 4.26 seconds.

The 4x200 relay team of Payne, Nate Lampe, Trease and Christian Ergenbright won the race in 1:33.03.

Klein’s third-place time in the 400 hurdles was clocked in 57.37 seconds. He also was fifth in the 400 in 54.01.

The other two top-eight individual finishes came from Thomas Stadelmann in the discus and Bauer in the 110 high hurdles. Stadelmann’s career-best throw was marked at 136 feet, 3 inches and Bauer completed the 110 hurdles in a career-best 16.44 seconds.

The Cardinals also were fifth in the 4x400 and sprint medley relays and they placed sixth in the distance medley relay.

In the 4x400 relay, the team of Klein, Lampe, Payne and Cole Walter finished in 3:35.67. Nick Thomason, Trease, Ergenbright and Cody Klein finished the sprint medley in 1:37.62.

The distance medley relay foursome featured Lampe, Thomason, Walter and Menninga and they completed the race in 4:03.15.
