Newton girls finish seventh at LHC meet

Shuttle hurdle relay team highlights Cardinals in Pella

PELLA — The Newton girls’ track and field team was held out of the win column at the Little Hawkeye Conference meet on Tuesday.

The Cardinals registered two top-three finishes and were in the top five in three other individual events.

It added up to a seventh-place finish as the Cardinals scored 58 points. They were nine points clear of Grinnell (49).

Pella won the conference championship with 146 points. Dallas Center-Grimes (127) was next and the rest of the top five included Indianola (111), Norwalk (105.5) and Pella Christian (70). Oskaloosa was sixth with 66.5 points.

The Cardinals’ top finish came in the shuttle hurdle relay. Newton was second with Macy Lampe, Mack Sims, JaQuay Priest and Tori White.

That foursome finished in 1 minute, 8.38 seconds. Norwalk won the race in 1:08.33 and Indianola was third in 1:09.36.

White grabbed the top individual finish. She took third in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches.

The individual fifth-place finishes came from Annie Main (15 feet, 4 1/2 inches) in the long jump, Harper Barton (career-best 5:19.49) in the 1,500-meter run, Brooklyn Shannon (career-best 1:03.96) in the 400 and Priest (16.83) in the 100 hurdles.

Lauren Clarke (career-best 13.33) finished sixth in the 100, Bella Winther (career-best 2:38.23) was seventh in the 800, Hadley Kruse (5:25.8) came in seventh in the 1,500 and Alyssa Beerends (1:15.73) ended up seventh in the 400 hurdles.

White placed eighth in the 100 hurdles in 17.24 seconds and Peyton Ray (13:28.2) took eighth in the 3,000.

The second-best relay finish came in the 4x800. The team of Kate Muckler, Barton, Briana Shannon and Kruse finished fourth in 10:34.44.

The Cardinals were sixth in the 4x100, 4x200, sprint medley and distance medley relays.

In the 4x100, Lampe, Lola Rivera, Winther and Priest finished in 53.29 seconds and Rivera, Clarke, Alex Riney and Winther completed the 4x200 in 1:57.09.

The sprint medley team of Clarke, Priest, Rivera and Brooklyn Shannon hit the finish line in 1:58.42 and the distance medley relay team ran a 4:51.38 with Claire Breuer, Briana Shannon, Sims and Muckler.
