Two relay wins lead Newton boys track at Ottumwa

Cardinals finish fourth at Don Newell Classic

OTTUMWA — Cody Klein and Nate Lampe spent enough time at the 73rd Annual Don Newell Classic to win the sprint medley relay on Tuesday.

Then the Cardinal juniors rode down the highway to play in the varsity soccer match.

The Newton boys’ track and field team won three events, registered 10 top-three tallies and scored a fourth-place team finish at Schafer Stadium.

Host Ottumwa won the meet championship with 155.5 points. Burlington was the runner-up with 112, Knoxville scored 110 in third and Newton had 90.5 points in fourth.

The rest of the six-team field included Fairfield (78) and Wayne of Corydon (38).

Two of the Cardinals’ three wins came in the sprint medley and shuttle hurdle relays. Caden Klein and Brody Bauer also went 1-2 in the 400-meter hurdles.

In the sprint medley, the team of Lampe, Nick Thomason, Christian Ergenbright and Cody Klein won the race in a season-best 1 minute, 36.89 seconds. That time currently ranks 15th in Class 3A.

The foursome of Reilly Trease, Nathan Milburn, Caden Klein and Bauer won the shuttle hurdle relay in a season-best time of 1:03.55, which ranks 12th in 3A.

Caden Klein won the 400 hurdles in a career-best 57.89 seconds and Bauer was second in a season-best 1:00.19. Klein’s time is currently 16th in 3A.

The other two runner-up finishes came in relays. The 4x100 team of Thomason, Trease, Ergenrbight and Milburn placed second in a season-best 45.01 seconds and the 4x200 relay team of Skyler Milheiser, Zach Felten, Boston Cupples and Wyatt Weter grabbed the silver medal in 1:41.69.

The Cardinals collected four third-place finishes. Ergenbright was third in the 200 with a time of 23.46, Caden Klein placed third in the 400 in a career-best 52.99 and Thomas Stadelmann grabbed the bronze in the shot put with a toss of 43 feet, 6 inches.

Newton went 3-4 in the 4x400 relay but only the third-place team scored points. The team of Cole Walter, Dawson Maki, Gabe Otto and Bryce Parker finished third in 4:00.15 and the fourth-place team of Koltt Ahn, Austin Arauz, Treyton Davidson and Jace Auen hit the finish line in 4:08.02.

The Cardinals scored double points in the 100, 200, 400 and 400 hurdles.

Trease and Thomason both ran career-best times in the 100 and placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in 11.64 and 11.88 seconds.

Weter tied for sixth in the 200 with a time of 25.56 and Walter was sixth in the 400 in a season-best 57.05.

Lance Zaabel came in fifth in the 3,200 with a career-best 11:57.06 and Bauer placed fifth in the 110 high hurdles in 17.5 seconds.

The 4x800 relay team also was fifth. The foursome of Brenden Holschuh, Kenny Skinner-Havens, Asher Wood and Riley Maple finished in 9:53.5.
