Relays highlight Cardinal girls’ third-place finish at Ottumwa

Terpstra registers Newton’s lone win at Schafer Stadium

OTTUMWA — Addy Terpstra collected the Cardinals’ only win but relays highlighted the night for the Newton girls’ track and field team at the 73rd Annual Don Newell Classic.

Terpstra won the 100-meter hurdles in a season-best time and the Cardinals were second five times and Newton scored nearly 100 points in third place at Schafer Stadium on Tuesday.

A pair of Class 4A programs — Iowa City West and Ottumwa — were the only squads ahead of Newton in the team standings. Iowa City West won the meet championship with 145 points and Ottumwa placed second with 117.

Newton scored 99 points in third and the rest of the top six were Knoxville (57), Burlington (55) and Wayne of Corydon (55). Fairfield (53) ended up seventh and Pella (5) was eighth in the eight-team field.

Terpstra’s winning time in the 100 hurdles was clocked in a season-best 15.31 seconds, which currently ranks fourth in 3A.

Macy Lampe gave the Cardinals double points as she was third in a career-best 17.41.

The lone individual runner-up finish came from Tori White. She placed second in the high jump with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches.

The other four silver-medal performances came in relays.

The 4x200 relay team of Lolo Rivera, Lauren Clarke, Bella Winther and JaQuay Priest took second in a season-best time of 1 minute, 52.46 seconds.

The 4x800, distance medley and shuttle hurdle relays also were second.

Harper Barton, Winther, Peyton Ray and Abbie Preston placed second in the 4x800 in 11:11.34 and the distance medley relay team of Brooklyn Shannon, Abby Bruce, Taylor Schilling and Kate Muckler were second in 4:45.91.

Terpstra anchored the shuttle hurdle relay team to second. Mack Sims, Priest and Chloe Rorabaugh joined the Cardinal senior and the foursome finished in 1:07.42.

The other third-place finishes came in the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

The foursome of Rivera, Clarke, Rorabaugh and Terpstra placed third in the 4x100 in a season-best time of 53.49 seconds.

Muckler, Winther, Shannon and Schilling placed third in the 4x400 in 4:27.43.

The sprint medley relay team finished fourth. That group included Rorabaugh, Priest, Rivera and Muckler and they hit the finish line in 1:58.52.

The Cardinals also piled up fourth- and fifth-place finishes.

Ray was fourth in the 1,500 in a career-best 5:35.72, Hadley Kruse took fourth in the 800 in a career-best 2:41.41 and Bruce finished fourth in the long jump with a career-best leap of 15-5.

Sims ended up fourth in the 400 hurdles, too. Her career-best time was clocked in 1:15.83.

Clarke finished fifth in the 100 in a career-best 13.85 seconds, Bruce was fifth in the 200 in 29.48 and Kruse placed fifth in the 3,000 in a career-best 12:11.88.

Annie Main gave Newton double points in the long jump as she was fifth with a leap of 15-2 1/2. Tierney Adams finished sixth in the shot put with a season-best toss of 32-2.
