Newton girls shoot season-best score, finish second at Grinnell

Cardinals face tough field at Lamson Invitational

GRINNELL — Marin Pettigrew was the runner-up medalist and Ella Price finished fourth to lead the Newton girls’ golf team to a runner-up finish during a Little Hawkeye Conference road quadrangular at Grinnell Country Club on Tuesday.

Two career-best rounds and a season-best score from the Cardinals led to a season-best team score of 196. Indianola shot a 192 at the top and Grinnell (201) and Oskaloosa (212) completed the four-team field.

“It was a good night of golf despite the tough course and challenging wind,” Newton girls’ head golf coach Nicole George said.

Indianola’s Amelia Moorlach won medalist honors with a 45. Pettigrew shot a 46 and won a cardback to finish as the runner-up medalist.

Price’s career-best 47 was good enough for fourth after she also won a cardback. Evie Main shot a season-best 50 and Addison Van Maanen’s career-best 53 capped the counting scores.

The Cardinals’ non-counting scores came from Eva Pak (54) and Addison Hook (59).
