Indianola downs Newton girls in LHC tennis matchup

Cardinals can’t get over hump against Indians

Ella Swarts and Roxanna Almazan both won three-set singles matches on Tuesday, but the Newton girls’ tennis team fell to Indianola during Little Hawkeye Conference action at Aurora Heights Park.

The Cardinals trailed 4-2 after the six singles matches and lost 8-2 following an 0-4 run through doubles.

Swarts and Almazan both rallied to win after losing the first set of their singles matches.

Swarts downed Audra Dowler 3-6, 6-2, 10-5 at No. 2 singles and Almazan rallied to win 6-7 (7-4), 6-0, 12-10 at No. 5 singles.

The Cardinals (2-4 overall, 1-3 in the conference) were close in a few other matches. Lauryn Garrett lost her No. 1 singles match in straight sets but both went to tiebreakers.

Garrett fell 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (7-4) and Paige Benson and Sloan Brodersen also lost a tiebreaker set at No. 5 doubles. Olivia Hotchkin lost her No. 3 singles match 6-3, 6-4 and Garrett and Madison Rinehart were defeated 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.
