Second-half surge sends Newton girls past Perry

Top-ranked Des Moines Christian too much for Cardinals

Briana Shannon and Riley Plowman scored second-half goals against Perry on Saturday during the Cardinal Classic at H.A. Lynn Stadium.

The Cardinals and Jayettes played to a scoreless draw in the first half, but Newton’s two goals in the final 30 minutes pushed the Cardinals to a win during the team’s annual home tournament.

The Cardinals also played Des Moines Lincoln but the results of that match were unavailable at press time.

Neither Newton nor Perry scored in the first half of the tournament’s first match.

The Jayettes (1-6) held a 6-2 advantage in shots but only two of those shots were on goal. The visitors also took the only corner kicks of the half, but the positive action didn’t lead to any scoring production.

In the second half, Newton (3-3-1) held a 7-2 advantage in shots, took the only three shots on goal and had a 4-2 surplus in corner kicks.

Shannon scored her fifth goal of the season when she cracked the scoreboard in the 38th minute. The sophomore fell down as she booted the ball to the right corner of the goal, but it gave the Cardinals a 1-0 advantage.

A little more than 5 minutes later, Newton made it 2-0 when Plowman scored her first goal of the season.

The goal was set up by Abby Chance’s through ball that bounced off the Perry goalie. Plowman was there to convert the goal off the deflection.

Notes: Perry picked up its first win of the season later in the day when the Jayettes downed Benton Community 1-0. …. The matches at the tournament were 60 minutes in length.
