Cardinal boys compete in relays at Iowa City West

IOWA CITY — The Newton boys’ track and field team went to Iowa City West on Saturday and competed in the Eastern Iowa Track and Field Festival.

The Cardinals were only in a handful of relays and scored top-six finishes in three events.

The 4x400-meter relay team led the way in third. That foursome of Cody Klein, Caden Klein, Nate Lampe and Curtis Payne finished in 3 minutes, 30.13 seconds.

That’s the Cardinals’ second-best time of the season and it would be good enough for 10th in Class 3A.

Newton’s 4x200 relay team of Cody Klein, Lampe, Reilly Trease and Christian Ergenbright finished fourth in a season-best time of 1:31.81, which ranks 16th in 3A.

The shuttle hurdle relay team also placed sixth. That foursome included Trease, Payne, Caden Klein and Brody Bauer and they finished in 1:07.16.
