Newton’s Terpstra hits Drake’s Blue Standard in 100 hurdles

Cardinal boys run wild in 4x400 relay at Norwalk

NORWALK — Defending Class 3A state champion Addy Terpstra is headed back to the Drake Relays.

The Cardinal senior hit the event’s Blue Standard in the 100-meter hurdles on Monday.

That highlighted the night for the Newton girls’ track and field team at the Norwalk Coed Track and Field Invitational. The Cardinals won three events at Warrior Stadium and finished fifth in the nine-team field.

Dallas Center-Grimes won the meet title with 156 points. Norwalk (113), Carlisle (110), North Polk (99) and Newton (83) rounded out the top five.

The rest of the field included Winterset (70), Grinnell (66), Nevada (24) and South Tama County (15).

Terpstra’s winning time in the 100 hurdles was clocked in a season-best 15.35 seconds. The Drake Relays Blue Standard is 15.4 and her time currently ranks second in 3A.

Terpstra placed in the top five in the event at the Drake Relays last spring.

She also anchored the Cardinals to a win in the shuttle hurdle relay. Newton’s foursome of Mack Sims, Macy Lampe, Chloe Rorabaugh and Terpstra finished the race in a season-best 1 minute, 6.61 seconds, which currently ranks second in Iowa and first in 3A.

The other win came in the sprint medley relay. The team of Lolo Rivera, Lauren Clarke, Bella Winther and Briana Shannon won the race in a season-best 1:56.4.

The next best finish for Newton came in the 4x800 relay. The foursome of Kate Muckler, Harper Barton, Hadley Kruse and Shannon finished third in a season-best 10:37.78.

The Cardinals scored double points in the 100 hurdles and the high jump.

JaQuay Priest finished fourth in the 100 hurdles with a career-best time of 16.59 seconds.

In the high jump, Tori White placed fourth with a leap of 4 feet, 10 inches and Alex Riney was fifth with a jump of 4-8.

The Cardinals were sixth in five other individual events. Those athletes included Shannon (career-best 5:32.28) in the 1,500, Peyton Ray (13:38.92) in the 3,000, Gracie Clayton (season-best 1:15.3) in the 400 hurdles, Annie Main (14-11 1/2) in the long jump and Jayden Lukefahr (97-4) in the discus.

Three other relays produced top-five finishes for Newton. The 4x200 and distance medley relay teams finished fourth and the 4x400 group was fifth.

In the 4x200, the team of Rivera, Clarke, Winther and Abby Bruce finished fourth in 1:52.84. The distance medley relay team of Priest, Sims, Riney and Barton ended up fourth in 4:49.01.

Winther, Barton, Muckler and Riney placed fifth in the 4x400 relay with a season-best time of 4:24.05.

Pair of relays lead Newton boys at Norwalk Coed

The Newton boys’ track and field team produced season-best times in the 4x400 and shuttle hurdle relays during the Norwalk Coed Track and Field Invitational on Monday.

The 4x400 relay team now has the fifth-best time in 3A after Caden Klein, Nate Lampe, Curtis Payne and Cody Klein finished second in a season-best 3:29.97.

The shuttle hurdle relay team of Payne, Caden Klein, Reilly Trease and Brody Bauer placed fourth with a time of 1:05.36. That time currently sits 11th in 3A.

The only other top-five finishes for Newton came from Christian Ergenbright in the 200-meter dash and Brody Bauer in the 400 hurdles.

Ergenbright ran a career-best time of 23.08 and placed fourth in the 200 and Bauer finished fifth in the 400 hurdles with a season-best time of 1:00.76.

The Cardinals were ninth in the nine-team field with 30 points.

Host Norwalk won the meet title with 194 points. North Polk scored 151 in second and the rest of the top five included DCG (87), Carlisle (85) and Winterset (71).

The bottom half of the field featured Grinnell (45), Nevada (44), South Tama County (32) and Newton (30).
