Newton boys open outdoor season with runner-up finish at Boone

Cardinals register three wins, 13 top-three finishes

BOONE — Cody Klein claimed the Cardinals’ lone individual win and a pair of relays also scored victories during the Newton boys’ track and field team’s outdoor opener on Monday.

Newton placed second in the Boone High School Boys Invitational, trailing only Little Hawkeye Conference foe Indianola.

The night was highlighted by three wins and 13 top-three finishes as the Cardinals scored 89 points in second. Indianola scored 142 points at the top and the rest of the five-team field included Fort Dodge (61), Boone (60) and Des Moines North (34).

Klein won the 100-meter dash in a career-best 11.58 seconds and he also placed second in the 400 with a career-best time of 52.67.

The Cardinals were 2-3 in the 200 with Christian Ergenbright and Nate Lampe. Ergenbright finished second in a career-best 23.61 and Lampe debuted with a 23.87.

Seven runner-up finishes highlighted the Cardinals’ night. They also were second in the 400 hurdles and the shot put.

Caden Klein took second in the 400 hurdles and he posted a varsity debut time of 58.81 seconds, which currently ranks seventh in Class 3A.

Thomas Stadelmann captured the final second-place tally. He was the runner-up in the shot put with a career-best toss of 44 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

Newton scored double points in the 100, 200, 110 high hurdles, 400 low hurdles and long jump.

Nick Thomason finished fourth in his 100 debut and registered a time of 11.94 seconds. In the 400 hurdles, Brody Bauer placed fourth with a time of 1 minute, 0.94 seconds.

In the 110 high hurdles, Curtis Payne placed fourth with a career-best time of 16.92 and Reilly Trease was fifth in 17.09.

The Payne-Trease duo also competed together in the long jump. Trease finished fourth with a leap of 18-6 3/4 and Payne came in sixth with a jump of 17-8.

Landon Menninga finished third in the 1,600 with a time of 4:50.84, Caden Klein took third in the high jump with a leap of 5-6 and Javin Doland came in fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:13.14.

The final top-six finish came from Stadelmann. He finished sixth in the discus with a heave of 105-2.

The Cardinals won two relays. They were first in the shuttle hurdle and distance medley relays.

In the shuttle hurdle relay, Payne, Bauer, Caden Klein and Trease finished in 1:05.84, which currently sits ninth in 3A.

The distance medley relay team of Eli Stewart, Troy Ramsey, Bauer and Menninga posted a winning time of 3:55.07.

Newton also placed second in the sprint medley, 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

In the sprint medley relay, the team of Trease, Thomason, Ergenbright and Doland was second in 1:41.9.

The 4x100 relay team of Ergenbright, Thomason, Lampe and Cody Klein finished second in 45.98 seconds.

Lampe, Caden Klein, Payne and Cody Klein competed in the 4x400 relay and the foursome placed second in 3:38.57.
