Cardinal boys pile up top-three finishes at Tigerhawk Indoor

Colfax-Mingo celebrates Senior Night at Grinnell College

GRINNELL — The Newton boys track and field team was missing a few athletes who will play significant roles on the varsity squad this spring during the Tigerhawk Indoor High School Relays on Tuesday.

That didn’t stop the Cardinals from piling up 14 top-three finishes at Grinnell College.

Newton won three individual events and took second six times.

Baxter also attended what is expected to be Colfax-Mingo’s lone home meet of the season and the Bolts also registered three victories.

Colfax-Mingo recognized Carter Gibson on its Senior Night. Gibson, the team’s lone senior, suffered an injury during the long jump and did not compete in any other events.

The Tigerhawks’ top finish came from Xavier Woods, who was fourth in the 60-meter hurdles and fifth in the high jump.

The Cardinals’ three individual wins came from Thomas Stadelmann in the shot put, Javin Doland in the 800 and Curtis Payne in the 200.

Newton also claimed a victory in the 4x200 relay.

Payne and Nick Thomason were 1-2 in the 200 with Payne winning the event in 24.12 seconds. Thomason ran 25.4 in second.

Doland won the 800 in 2 minutes, 14.29 seconds and Christian Buchli finished fifth in 2:26.49.

Stadelmann’s winning throw in the shot put was marked at 43 feet, 5 inches. Baxter’s Trice Clapper was the runner-up with a heave of 39-6 1/2.

Two of Baxter’s three wins came from Logan Rainsbarger. He won the long jump with a leap of 19-4 1/2.

Newton’s Reilly Trease was the runner-up in the event with a jump of 18-10 1/2 and Payne finished third with a mark of 18-4. Baxter’s Cainan Travis ended up fourth with a leap of 17-11 1/2.

Rainsbarger also won the 60 hurdles with a time of 9.03 seconds. Payne (9.73), Trease (9.75) and Woods (9.77) were second, third and fourth, respectively.

The Bolts other win came from Carson Scroggins. He won the 400 dash with a time of 55.06 and Newton’s Caden Klein finished second in 55.82.

Klein also was third in the high jump with a leap of 5-8. Baxter’s Treyton Travis (5-6) and Woods (5-6) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

The final individual event was the 1,600 run. Baxter’s Matt Richardson led the way in third with a time of 5:10.37 and Newton’s Presley Arnold (5:21.22) edged out teammate Collin Buchli at the line for fifth.

Newton’s final win came in the 4x200 relay. The foursome of Trease, Nathan Milburn, Klein and Thomason finished in 1:37.56. Baxter’s team of Cade Robinson, Alex Dille, Treyton Travis and Jake Travis finished fifth in 1:45.41.

The Cardinals’ other runner-up finishes came in the shuttle hurdle and the 4x50 shuttle relays.

In the shuttle hurdle relay, Payne, Trease, Trey Davison and Klein were part of the runner-up team which finished in 39.74 seconds. Baxter’s foursome of Rainsbarger, Ashton Kerwin, Keenan Varner and Logan Jones placed third in 39.92.

In the shuttle relay, Thomason, Eli Stewart, Jace Auen and Milburn were second in 30.56. Baxter’s Dille, Varner, Kerwin and Treyton Travis finished third in 31.05.

The Bolts were second in three relays. Their 4x800 team of Richardson, Cody Damman, Cody Samson and James Esqueda took second in 9:24.89 and the distance medley relay team of Robinson, Cainan Travis, Rainsbarger and Jones grabbed the silver medal in 4:04.29.

Baxter’s 4x400 relay team of Robinson, Cainan Travis, Damman and Scroggins took second in 3:51.16.

Newton’s 4x800 relay team of Doland, Collin Buchli, Christian Buchli and Arnold placed third in 9:24.89 and Colfax-Mingo’s team of Owen Ament, Izaiah Lewis, Sullivan Wilkins and Kyle Wood finished fifth in 10:33.45.

Colfax-Mingo’s distance medley relay team of Isaiah Baucom, Wyatt Thornton, Ament and Wood finished fifth in 4:57.97.
